View Full Version : Protection from Rock Dings
Was just wondering what things I should do in order to protect my new rig when trailering. I know I've seen some posts in the past regarding spraying "rock guard" on trailers. Is this something that makes sense? Are there other creative ways to keep the rig looking new. I'm assuming that mud flaps on the truck would help. Does anybody use mud/rock guards or maybe even their equivalent that is part of the trailer hitch assembly? I think I've seen the ones that cover the entire back end of the truck somewhere. Does anyone know where in Minnesota to go for these? also cost? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dale
One of the slickest things I have seen, was on my fathers in law boat out in Montana.
Because of all the rock and gravel roads - there is a company out there that makes fiberglass boat protectors.
They mount on the front of the trailer - and basically look like the bow of a boat.
The bow of the boat nestles in this protector, and is completly protected.
I think that they run about $300-$400.
They clearly work better than any thing else that I have seen.
Check some of the marinas and boat supply stores in Montana or search the web sites.
I believe that there is a supplier in the Glasgow montana area - near fort peck and I believe that there is another supplier in Great Falls Montana.

Mud flaps do make a big difference.
If you get the kind that is put on motor homes - full width - with the brush type pass through - they eliminate nearly all stones and rock damage.
You can get the kind that fit in a slide removable track - so that if you aren't towing - you can pull it out of the track and stow it in the garage. It will run about $100.
Check out some of the aftermarket truck supply shops. Nearly all of them carry similar protectors.
Take care

Thanks Rew!
The slide in flap for the truck sounds like the way for me to go.

Have a full size flap - Rock Solid - that does very well.
Won't get 100% - but sure helps. BPS or Cabellas.
Made to hook to the hitch or drawbar - I had a few pieces welded on the drawbar - and just leave it on thedrawbar. Can remove it in 2 minutes - but never do. This is not the one that looks like a brush... t

Worth the investment to protect your rig!!!!!
I have a mud flap that I bought from Cabellas for $140.00 and they fit the reciever hitch. Great design and removeable with the hitch. On and off is no time.
The mud flap is wide enough to cover almost the hole back of my Sub. Best system I have seen out there for the money.
You can find them in the spring master catalog of cabellas
enjoy the upcoming season

We sell the ones that REW was telling about. However, I have located what I think is a better design and easier to install and best of all can be shipped Fed-Ex.
The manufacturer is unable to keep up with demand at the moment, however, I would be happy to e-mail pictures, very soon.
The cost is $350.00 plus shipping.
I will have some to ship in the next few weeks. I am getting a couple installed on boats next week.... and I will take digital photos.

I am wondering if this is the system you are referring to at Cabela's?
www.cabelas.com/texis/scripts/store/+/CatalogDisplay/displayPOD/CabFALL1998/CabFALL1998AhAIAC/XA926L
Also, does this system beat up your tow vehicle's bumper in any way?
Best Regards,
