I've noticed that I have an excessive amount of smoke bellowing out of my Merc 225EFI. I had it checked out and compression and everything appear fine. I use the Penzoil Marine 2 stroke oil and am wondering if anyone else has this problem with this oil. I plan to change back to quiksilver and am hoping that fixes it. After the engine warms up it appears to be better. But if it sits for a while then it smokes up a storm again. I've cracked the oil resevoir to see if I had excessive pressure after running down the lake but it really doesn't seem to bad.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Good Luck and Good FIshing

One thing I have notice in the last few years in boat and snowmobile is that alot of manufactures have gone to semi synthetic oils or synthetic oil. Synthetic oil burns cleaner and leaves less deposits and smokes less. Yamaha-Lube is now Semi Synthetic and is better for the OX66 motors because the sensor was getting dirty and were not working properly and also Ring Free helped also. Mercury makes Optimax 2-cycle oil that is synthetic and that might cure your problem. You might want to check with your dealer to see if that will work. And I know that someone like T-Mac would know if the oil will work beacuse he works at a dealer. Also check with Amsoil becuse they are suppose to make a great oil.

We have twin 225EFI'S on our work boat. We Go directley what the operaters handbook says and what Howard Loomis from Merc tells us. These engines are one year old and we put nearley 600 hrs on them and they started smoking near the end of summer but ran great.

My 2000, 225 EFI smokes really bad on startup also, especially in this cold weather. I was told that is because of trimming the motor nearly all the way up to install the transom saver for road travel. I'm not completely convinced of that, but my 1989, 135 Merc did the same thing. I've tried different oils to no avail and like you, I'm still looking for better answers. It starts easy, doesn't smoke(much) after warmup, but it is rather embarrassing at the ramp.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. What oil do you use?

I'm using Quicksilver at the present time, but in my 135 I tried many different oils and wound up using Lubrimatic, I found it worked just as well as anything else and better than most and costs lots less. I hesitate to use anything but Merc oil while my engine is so new, even though the warranty ran out last month. Like you I'd sure like to get a good answer.
