I'm looking for a line counter to attatch to my rod. I've found the Pradco in my Bass Pro catalog and the Shakespeare in my Cabala's catalog. Has anyone had any experience with either of these? How are they?

I tried the Shakesphere "digital" LED line counter and it lasted a week. I since bought the Shakesphere mechanical line counter but have not ised it and am consiering getting the new Shakesphere Tidewater reel with a built in line counter. I have a pair of the old Tidewaters without the line counters and am pleasantly surprised and happy with these less expensive reels. (About $33.00 each on sale).

Cabelas sale catalog just arrived today, and they have their line counters(machanical not digital) on sale for $59.00. I have used one of these for a couple of years and I like it. Pretty solid, and easy to use, seems to have a fairly good drag. I have heard the Shakespeare Tidewater line counter is a pretty good reel for the money. Fleet Farm has the Tidewaters for $39.95.

Jim -
I have tried the Tidewater linecounters too and they are a nice reel for the money. I saw them on FishUSA.com in both sizes for $48.95.
You may also want to look at the Okuma line counters. They are becoming popular and are in generally the same category as the Tidewater. They are a bit more expensive, but the DX models are 2 ball-bearing. Checked out that FishUSA.com and they have these too.

I have two of the Shakespeare mechanical line counters that clamp on to the rod. They work well and have had no trouble with them. For $9 their hard to beat.

I have used the Shakespeare clamp-on and it seems to work fine. The other I have has a little white wheel and metal spring feet to clamp it to the rod (Pradco?). Forget that one. You can't keep the line tight on the wheel-it constantly pops off (the line, that is).
