View Full Version : A bearing question...

Hi all,

Having never taken a wheel assembly apart to repack bearings, I am definitely speaking from a position of ignorance. I would like to ask a question about wheel bearings on a trailer using Bearing Buddies. Do both the inner and outer bearings get lubed by the Buddies, or is it only the outers that benefit?

Now here's my reason for asking...IF both bearings get lubed together, and IF the Buddies create positive pressure to keep any water out of the hub assembly, and IF normal use of the trailer necessitates regular "topping up" with clean grease, why would you have to disassemble them periodically and manually clean and pack them?

Any input would be appreciated. Here sits an idle mind waiting for the ice to go away! Thanks.

1. The seal isn't perfect. Ther will still be little water in your grease.
2. You have to take everything apart to seasonally inspect the bearings anyway. Even when packed in grease, mechanical devices wear out.

Bearing Buddies are not a "cure all". Water always gets in and
"pits' the inner bearing first as it does not get the lube the outer one does. They nee to be diassemled every year/washed in solvent and inspected and replaced as nessesary always with a new seal .You don't need trouble on the road as i did. You wreck an axle and a little extra time would have been time and money well spent.

Anyone try the SURE LUBE Trailer Hub replacements??? Says you can just grease them and remove old grease from cap, no need to disassemble...
