I do not want to drill a 1 1/2 inch hole in my gunnels. Will the Ram Rod Flush Mounts work upside down.... so I only need to attach with screws. I do not care If the mount sticks up a bit.

I would go ahead and use the 1 1/4" (or so) hole saw and drill out the large hole, lay the mount in there and mark & drill the 4 screw holes. Then, mount it in the flush setting. If you insist on not doing that, try installing the rod holder into the mount before installing the mount onto anything. The rod holder and mount may have tapered walls which will make them only fit together from the top side of the mount.
After you drill & mount the first one, the other 8 or 9 wont be so scary. I understand your concern though. I can still see the look on my wifes face the first time I drove a big hole saw into a $30,000 boat!
