The Great Guide

A topic simular to this was posted about a year ago and I really learned alot. What 4 or 5 things do you keep in your boat that you won't leave home without? (other than fishing rods and tackle)

Thanx

Light Bolt cutter, works great for cutting through any hooks, whether it be a deep hooked fish or god forbid a friend:)

In addition to all the above good stuff, don't forget to bring sunflower seeds, BBQ'd/smoked turkey drumsticks and dog food for your faithfull snarff!

No sunflower seeds (or in-shell peanuts) in my boat pull-eeze! The empties just don't make it to the trash (I would have said over the side, but could imagine the shots I would have taken).

You're overloaded, or you've got a mighty big vessel.

Ha! Been there! :) Got yelled at plenty! hehe

Now, though, it doesn't matter. That stuff gets vacuumed up easy, and while our boat is clean, I make sure that having fun and eating good is a part of the trip. Seeds and peanuts are great! And yes, I do throw them over the side. I also pick up other peoples trash in the lake when I see it (plastic, cans, bags, etc.).

I figure it is more fun "using" a boat than keeping it showroom clean. I also like it when things "wear out". It means I'm getting my use out of it.

My Dad, on the other hand, is more of the "no seeds" type. Well, I pay more for the boat now, so he has to follow my rules ;)

Good fishing,

Ha Ha! Lund 1800 Pro V se. Now if I can just figure out why the 175 will only push it at 17mph WOT. Anyway way, all that "stuff" doesn't take up too much space, still have plenty of room for more "stuff". Hey, I was a Boy Scout and I guess I really took the "Be Prepared" motto to heart!

Best Regards,

You are quite correct -- I was just joshing a bit. This whole thread has listed many, many important items all boaters should have aboard while on the water.

I've got to remember the big zip-lock bag tip so I can keep stuff dry in less than waterproof compartments.

A carton of smokes, a 12 pack of beer, and 3 or 4 joints when the bite gets slow.

forget the jumper cables, get a portable jumper pak, cost the same as a good set of cables. I can't tell you how many times I have given jump starts at the launch. I never leave home w/o it.

Rather than the zip lock bags for waterproofing.
Pick up a couple of various sized - wetwater rafting bags from Cabellas Bass Pro or other sources. These bags are so waterproof that they will float all day long, and at the end of that time, everyting inside will be bone dry. I always keep things that MUST stay dry in these bags.

Take care

Did anyone mention the handy trash bucket (with lid)?

For me it is so much a part of every outing I forget to mention the thing. Wrappers, ruined jigs, chewed-up plastic bait, mono and other line, pop cans, etc. -- all go in the bucket so as not to blow out into the lake. Any glass and aluminum I separate back home for recycling.

water proof matches. short squatty candles. they provide a long burning flame for starting fires if you get stranded on an island. an extra 100 ft of rope left in the bag so that it stores well. 2 gals. of drinking water. mosquito repellant. a big sheet of polly left in the plastic bag. a staple gun and lots of spare power baits. a spare marine battery and booster cables. bag of candies and some jerky.

A net, marker, flow minnow bucket, hookout, bucket, minnow net, cooler for bait and lunch.
The other stuff is always there this stuff will help fishing in the cold. Bring some extra gloves too.

Bye god don't forget your scale, a couple of years ago I had all my gear packed for a Canada trip, and went for one last outing on the Missouri river before I left, and cought the biggest flathead of my life. I'm guesing that it went 42lb. but I don't know for sure, thank God I had my camera.

It's really scary. I think I have everything mentioned above (except the smokes, beer and joints). I bought a new prop last year and I am now trying to find a place to keep the old one as a spare. I was watching a Bass fishing tournament and a Bass dude had his bowmount die. He opened the storage door, pulled out a spare bowmount and a powered screwdriver and in 5 minutes he was fishing again. This guy had more redundancy that the space shuttle.

A pair of side cutters. Getting a hook in you hand is bad but if you get hooked by a crankbait with a big fish on it....YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE. Grab the side cutters quick.
