This is just a pet peeve.
I wish that when folks talk about fishing line that they use only lb test when they talk about their line. I don't think that it is relevant to anything when they talk about diameter.

If you have 6 lb line, you have 6 lb line.

I get tire of hearing about 2/6 - 4/8 / 10/14 fire line -

When we talk about fishing line -- lets use lb test.

Take care

I dissagree. It makes a differance to me when I am trolling what diameter I use. The depth the lure will run is effected by the diameter. Just a thought. Take Care JK

I would agree w/ REW 10 lb Firelne is 10 lb Fireline. Lb test and brand name or type of line is all that is needed all the rest is unnecessary and confusing.

I agree with REW for the most part but... There are times when line dia. matters. Foreinstance when your talking about spooling certain reels. In this case line dia. is an issue because most manufactures of reel products use mono. as a reference to size reel capacity. With that they specify line lb. test but what they are really using is dia. of average mono. Other than that I agree, Dia.doesn't mean squat!

In that last sentence I'm talking about fishing line only ofcourse.

I believe line diameter does affect fishing. First, the smaller the diameter, the less visible the line is... important in clear water jigging and slip float fishing. Second, line diameter affects the depth at which a trolled bait will run as well as the depth a cast crankbait can achieve. Third, line diameter will affect the action of light jigs. I'm sure there are probably other considerations to line diameter as well, but these three come to mind very quickly. Steve (IA)

Sure, diameter may be important, but when someone says 8# test is there a standard diameter implied that's understood by everyone? Instead of listing test maybe we should be quoting diameter.

I agree with you. Just use the lb. test of the line. If what you say has anything to do with diameter, just say whether it's mono, fireline, spiderwire, etc. We'll understand :-)

Steve,
I simply second George's comments.
I completely agree with you that diameter is very important in many fishing applications.

The only point that I am trying to say is that lets talk lb test. If you want to mention brand - fine - we can do the diameter translation.

Thanks for your kind consideration.

Take care

I've got no problem with using the listed lb test of a line as it's label in a conversation... as long as we realise there can be quite a difference between lines. Ever in search of the perfect balance of strength, abrasion resistance, limpness and, or course, thin diameter; I appreciate objective comparisons between "fishin' strings". Steve (IA)
