I am in negotiations for a Lund 1650 Rebel-V .I had decided on the 40 yamaha 2 stroke tiller.I had heard how well this motor performs from everyone here on the board. Well now my dealer has thrown the wrench in by offering me a 2000 4stroke yamaha 40 for the same price as the 2001 2stroke 40. I have not warmed up to the 4stroke idea as yet,for various reasons. Cost for one,but that has just been eliminated. Other reasons were weight. But the 2 and 4 stroke Yamahas are aprox the same, weight, aproxmatly same displacment.(at least in the 2001 models.Have they changed at all since 2000??) So there goes that issue! So how do they run in comparison to each other. Is the periodic valve adjustments really an issue and required as discussed by a few on a previous note? Power, fuel economy, and most important ,trolling?? Are they all they are cracked up to be? I am not thrilled with the idea of all those little moving parts. However,if I could get SIGNIFICANT gains in fuel economy ,and troll nice and smooth and slow,I could warm up to it. What say you good people??

Now thats a Tough Call as I have used them both. Is the boat and Trailer a 2001? For resale reasons you may want everything to be the same model year... Although that does sound like a fair deal. The '00 is BRAND NEW? not a demo or anything? With 4 strokes as popular as they are, you may have a better resale on it down the road even though it is older. Resale seems to be importand to lund buyers, they hold value...looks klike I could not decide either

Hey Mark. If the 2-stroke came with power tilt/trim, and the 4-stroke did not, I would get the 2-stroke for performance reasons. I know they are both great motors, but trim and tilt is very important to me. Good luck, and I wish I had your problem, lol.

After owning both I wouldn't have to think twice about it. The 4 stroke is quieter, almost twice as good on gas, and better trolling forward and back. Power should be close but the edge may go to the 2 stroke by an MPH or two. Tilt and trim is always nice to have on any motor so check into that but it wouldn't sway me from the 4 stroke. As for resale value, 4 strokes are only going to get more popular and desireable. I can't tell you how many "I wish I would have..." I've heard this year already from 2 stroke owners. That's means your going to take a big kick in the pants when it comes to unloading your motor or boat with motor in the future. If it doesn't cost any more, I'd take the 4.
I agree with Adam. I have a 2000 4 stroke and there is nothing bad to say about it. You can hardly tell that it is running and I never did use the 3/4 of a boat tank of gas that I started out the season with, although I was out about 15 times.

Another postter said he has "owned Both" are you talking Motors in general or Yamahas?? Yamahas are fantastic Midrange Outboards. Lasy Year We had a Yammie 40 4 Stroke A Yammie 40 2 Stroke and AN Evinrude 40 2 Stroke. The Evinrude was no Comparison to The Yammie. Its Noisy 2 Cyl Actually Guzzled Gas and was considerably slower, louder . This is a tough desision for Yamaha Vs. Yamaha

Yes the 2000 4stroke is brand new in a box.3 year full warranty, Powertrim+tilt,Tachometer standard. Same weight as 2 stroke. Dealer opinion is I should get 30% better fuel efficiency.I think I'm goin for it!

I have owned both 2 and 4 strokes in that hp range. I wouldn't hesitate on buying the 4 stroke. There are too many positives for the latter!
Besides, if you don't like it, you will be able to sell it no problem.
