I've decided that a Ram Mount is going to work best for a Garmin 160 unit I am mounting on the bow. However they have two sizes and I am not sure which to go with.

The original Ram has a 1.5" ball and the micro has a 1" ball. Does the 1" hold as solid as the bigger one? I've never used either and the local dealers don't have any on stock to look at for comparison. Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks- Dan

I use a micro mount on both an X-85 and a Garmin 162 and they seem plenty solid and take up less room than the larger mount. They've held up fine running on rough water. MLD

The other thing thats great about the RAM mounts is lots of positioning options. I also use a large mount to secure my electric motor while running or trailering. MLD

I would use the larger Ram mount on the bow. Things up there take the worst abuse in rough water. I have a micro ram on my console holding a 350a. The micro doesnt stand up to rough water and the unit begins to move around. The larger Ram unit up front also holds a 350a and doesn't budge. I have also noted that the micro balls seem to dent and are not as easy to reposition.

Size the mount to the electronics you are hoping to secure. If the electronics are big and heavy like a 350 lms or x-15 or any of the larger ones use the large mount. If the electronics are smaller you micro should work well.
I have a X-85 on the bow with a micro and the 350 on console on the large one plus a global nav 310 on console with the micro.
If you never want nothing to move or you want extra height like in the bow so the finder is within easy reach go with the largest mount.

Hope this helps

I agree with Pitts. I have the larger size holding up Bottom Line finders on the bow and console, however, I have the cell phone holder and I believe it is the smaller size. Size them to the job.
