I am planning on making my first trip to Rainy Lake this summer. I have never been to Rainy Lake before and plan to fish the Minnesota side. Will be concentrating on walleye and small mouth bass, mostly walleye. Will be going up first part of July. Any help would be greatly appreciated as to lodging and fishing area preference. Plans are to fish about 4 days. What type of presentations will I be using at this time? Is a guide needed to get to know the lake or is it pretty fisherman friendly? I will be bringing my own boat. Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated. John

Fishing Hot Spots has two brand new maps out for Rainy Lake. Check 'em out on their site.

Roscoe,

Rainy lake is a big body of water. Might not be a bad idea to hire a guide for at least a half day your first day there. That way you will maximize your fishing time, rather than working to figure it all out and be finally on some fish and its your last day oof your trip. Been there, done that.
My experience has showed me on Rainy Lake that in July, mid lake humps can excel with live bait rigs and btm bouncers and spinners. Don't be afraid to look deep here, (25-35ft)Also, when the wind blows on this lake, The walleyes here love crankbaits casted onto windswept shorelines, islands, points, you will also find smallies there too.

Good luck
