Going to Leech Lake walleye fishing second week in June. I have always used 4# Trilene XL for live bait rigging. I see that a number of new mono lines are now available. Is XL the best for this application???

Don't waste your time. A friend of mine just bought some of the new 6# XL and the line has weak spots through out the line. He brought it to work and showed me fresh off the spool you could see areas where the line could be weak.
I told him to take it back and get his money back and get some new line. He wound up buying the new Remington line and it seemed to be a lot better. Also had a smaller diameter (mic'd it @ 0.0058") and was just as limp. He will let me know how it worked Monday. I use Spider Wire Super Mono XL in the 6# and really like the way it performs. Strong, Limp, and really sensitive.
Hope this helps.

maybe give trilene xt a try...it is stiffer, but in the
real light weights its fine. i used to use xl but switched
to xt so i could use the solar green line. it doesnt seem to
have weakspots. there is clear xt if you dont want the solar.
there are a bunch of new mono lines out there to try, this may
be a good time to find a new favorite for yourself..
good luck

Used Trilene for years and now I wouldn't even think about after they changed formula. Rapala finesse is what you want if you liked xl you'll love this stuff. Never used 4 lb. test for Walleye. You must be fishin for some little ones or maybe they have no teeth!

I really like Trilene's Tournament Strength stuff. I think thats what its called. In the gold metallic box. Thats the 4 pound line I use. I also have some 14 on a baitcaster. I like it more than XL. I've been hearing a LOT about the new XL being crap, both here and on a few other boards. I'm going to steer clear of that for a while. Luckily, I still have plenty of line for this season on my 1000 yard spool. Try the Tournament Strength.
its called ultra-light and finesse. you must not know much about that. i caught two 8 pounders and 1 9 last year on a 5'6" ultra light with 4 pound test. and that was trilene XL in the 4lb.
the stuff is just fine

I have been a life long Trilene user until the super lines came on strong. I use mostly Fireline and Whiplash now, but have found that Cabelas Pro line is a very good mono. I have used it for a couple of years now, where I use mono, and it really is nice line. I use it in the 10lb for inline boards..don't like Fireline for this application, and really like it. The price is right also. Like Curt says, there are a lot of them out there, try some new ones. I have just found that I like the Cabelas Pro line. If you try some new ones, let us know what you find..

Silver Thread is a very good line. It is very popular in some areas yet in other areas noone buys it. Berkley's sensi thin is another very good, fine dia., strong line that would be a good choice in the 4# range. Sensi thin is also a low stretch line so be sure to back your drag off a bit. Stren is another regional line. A lot of people think it is weaker than Berkley. There is a reason for that. Stren gives you an honest break strength. Berkley, on the other hand, under rates their line strength by about 2 pounds. Of course Berkley has the stronger 6 pound test because it is actually 8 pound line with a 6 pound box. The In-Fisherman exposed this a few years back in one of their articles. Many will doubt what I say so try these tests. Do a break test and see for yourself what weight each will break at. Next, measure the dia. of the lines using a micrometer. Stren is good line. The trick is to buy it 2 pounds heavier than you need and you will have line that is about equal to Berkley in both dia. and strength. Try a spool of their flouresant blue line and see how good it really is.

I use the best Maxima... It is a great line a bit more costly but what ever, in life you get what you pay for.. The only trilene I use is Fire line its the greatest.. But trilene in mono don't waste your money........... just my opinion
If you want to stick with mono, another vote for Sensithin. If you want to try a superline - PowerPro.

I caught a 10 pounder with 4# XT on a ultra lite rig last year. Jig & minnow. Took a while but was worth it. Let her go.

I spoke with an engineer that has tested all different mono lines and told me that if a line gets a nick from a fish, 4XL will stretch while 6XL, or line with less stretch we be more apt to break. He told me it is related to the tensile strength of the line. I've used 4XL as mainline and leader for rigging since 92' and have only broken off twice (both times were my own fault). This includes boating over 100 - 25" plus fish.

I've been testing a new mono line that seems to be good. It's not quite on the market yet, but has performed well with the smaller diameters and large a like. It's called Lightning Line and will be available from Tacklecanada.com. I also like to use Damyl and Maxima, these lines are little more expensive but have a longer shelf life and lower memory to resist coiling on spining gear.

I have used 4# trilene xl for years for jigging but after reading all the quotes on how easy the new trilene is to break, I switched to tournament strength in the gold box. Guess what?? I tested several sections for breaking strength and it also breaks easy. Lucky for me I found a couple of spools of 4# trilene from last year in the basement where it has been in a cool place and tested it and seems fine. What do I do when I have to replace?
