Ok so all this talk about a jack plate has got me thinking maybe I should try one. I read the articles by REW and he mentioned using a 2" to 3" adjustable jackplate, everything I have looked at is 5"-6" adjustable and 2" fixed. Where can a person find a adjustable manuel jackplate? I also have cable steering so I do not want put to much of a bend in my steering cable. By the way the boat is Mr Pike 17 w/F115 Yamadinger.

Thanks and good luck, moreyes

Hey REW,

Are there situations where you'd get a manual jackplate dialed in for your rig and then wish you could lower it on the fly, like when in rough water? I'm going to get a jack plate, but am wondering if a manual one might result in the motor being too high for certain conditions. I realize that they're still adjustable, but it seems like too much of a compromise...

Brain,
The situation you cited is exactly the reason many go to an automatice jackplate. However, the cost factor difference between manual and auto is quite significant.

Another product to consider is the Panther Model 300 Dual Action Jack Lift. I have one of these on my 1800 Pro V SE and I love it. The set back is more than you are looking for, however, it is so nice to be able to adjust the engine height from the helm when running. On my boat I fully trim out the engine, then I start jacking it up. Once I get the engine lifted several inches the boat just seems to "come alive", the spray is way back on the hull, the steering is "loose"... Also, Eric Olson at Panther is a great asset to this board and it's nice to support their products; www.panthermarineproducts.com . Just my $.02.
