Mississippi River, locks and dams, tentatively opens on May 9
St. Paul, Minn. - - The Mississippi River locks and dams, from Minneapolis to northern Iowa, will tentatively open on May 9, 2001, according to Army Corps of Engineers officials.
Corps of Engineers officials met with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) today to assess the navigation condition of the Mississippi River for commercial and recreational boat traffic. "After looking at a number of issues that affect the river, the Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard have decided to tentatively open the Mississippi River on May 9, 2001, nearly two months after the start of an average navigation season," said Dennis Erickson, Corps of Engineers operations chief. "This opening depends on no further significant precipitation and damage assessments."
The water on the Mississippi River is finally dropping to acceptable levels to consider reopening to navigation, said Erickson. The Coast Guard and the Corps also expressed concern for hazards to navigation, such as debris and trees that have fallen into the river due to the flooding and high water.
The Corps of Engineers' St. Paul District is responsible for the operation of the 13 locks and dams from Minneapolis to Guttenberg, Iowa. For more Army Corps of Engineers information call Erickson at 651-290-5322 or the USCG at 651-290-3991
