I am having thoughts of trading my 2000 Suburban off for a new Ford Excursion. I like the Suburban, although being 6'5" tall, I find that I am a bit cramped as far as leg room is concerned. The center floor console hems me in a bit also. My Suburban is a 4x4 2500 with a 6.3 litre engine and has plenty of power. I travel long distances and one of my concerns is seating comfort. I have been told that the seats in the Fords are much harder than the Chevys so they are not as comfortable. I have found that test driving a vehicle is like trying a new bed. You never get to spend enough time to really get to know how it really feels. Any input on the ride of the Excursion? Is there any feedback on problems with the Excursion? Anything else I should be aware of in purchasing this vehicle? I am assuming that gas milage and towing will be very similar. Thanks for the replies.

My Brother in law has an Excursion and he is very disappointed with the power and mileage as well as ride. 8 miles to the gallon tops. He is trading it back off for another suburban.

The Excursion with the disel in it should be considered. With gas prices the way they are. Diesel is running around 25 cents a gallon less than gasoline. I have the diesel in my F350 and pull a fifth wheel and a 18foot boat an still get 14 mpg. Get the captain chairs in the excursion and you will be plenty comfortable.

Have a friend that test drove the Ford Excursion and took it home to see how it fit in his garage, it didn't. He has a standard size garage, I think 22 X 24 feet. Something to think about.

SK, end your concerns by renting one for the weekend. Seriously, you will find its quirks and comfort zones, etc for yourself. Both rigs are large enough to provide ample room even for your 6'5". Of all the complaints I have heard for both, cramped has never been one, LOL.

Good luck. Both are great rigs.

I own a Excursion Diesel 4x4. It is built like a tank. The ride is close but not as good as a suburban. I TESTED BOTH !

There is more room up front in the Excursion to stretch out.
I'm 6'2" 265lbs with no space issues up front at all.
I have the "Limited" with leather seats that are pretty comfy.

The Suburban is more fancy smancy than the Excursion. But the Ford is built alot beefier.

It tows like a dream !!

Eats diesel like a semi !!
I avg. 13 city 16 highway -diesel-
I have 14,000 miles on it mostly towng and -NO- problems so far.
Also come with a 100,000 powertrain warranty

good luck

I am 6'4" and 280lbs. I share your fraustration. After test driving the suburban, expedition, and excursion (also many pickups), I settled on the expedition.
Turning radius is much shorter than the excursion or suburban.
Plenty of towing capacity and can still get the 3rd seat for passenger hauling.
I average 14 towing and 17 - 18 on the go. All highway miles.
I am very pleased with the vehicle.

I rented one a few months ago (Hertz @ $75 a day unlimited mileage) and drove it about 500 mi. on the Interstate (Des Moines/Minneapolis). It was fine and Kenworths move out of the way when the cruise control is on ;-)...

Check out www.edmunds.com for reviews, they also have a few threads pertaining to the Excursion.

Have a 2000 Ex. Limited and have had very good luck with it. With the V-10 it does 11-12mpg, 13+ on the highway if you don't push it too hard. Lots of power and lots of room.(I'm 6'6" and I can sit in it with my cap on) The expedition i had before handled better but the ride of the excursion is fine if you are used to a pickup. No maintainance problems yet. cw

The suggestion of renting before buying is a good one. One other alternative if you are still not sure of which way to go is buy a used 2000. There are a suprizing number of 2000 Excursions and Suburbans available on autotrader.com.

Buying used might not get you the exact rig you want, but the big first year depreciation hit has made many of the used Excursions available in the high twenties. The warranties are transferable and the risk should be close to nil if it doesn't work out for you, i.e., you can sell it or trade it for close to what you paid for it. The risk is going brand new, if you don't like it, you get nailed selling or trading it a year or two later.

I have v-10 in my Excursiuon also, has the 3/73 gear, mileage is same as yours, no problems so far, I pull 26 ft glass boat and get 9miles gallon pulling it. The suspension and brakes have held up better than my suburbans did, it is a tank to drive but best towing vehicle for my usage. Lots of room in the second and third seat area compared to suburbans, especially newer ones.Bob
