Looking for suggestions on new motor. Have a 1988 Johnson 50hp 2 stroke, looking for more quiet, smoother at lower rpm, and better fuel economy, figure it's time to look at 4 stroke. What brands (Honda?), benefits 4 stroke vs. 2 stroke, etc.. What do you all say?

Pros for a 4 stroke, much quieter, smoother, much improved fuel economy, and my favorite, no fumes. Cons for a 4 stroke, more expensive, heavier, somewhat slower out of the hole, just the nature of the engine. Buy what you can afford, Honda, Yamaha, Mercurys are for the most part Yamahas anyway, OMC's are Suzuki's Remember it is convenient to be near a dealer for service.

Mercury now has a 50 4 STRK EFI, the price should run around $5600.00. You can now get the 4 STRK EFI in a 30, 40 50 and 60 HP.

Suzuki. Their 50 HP EFI is straight from their small car and cycle equipment. Time tested and proven. The Merc's will be good motors in time but I question their first run reliability. Hondas are always a good choice but old technology. If you can get EFI in any motor, I would choose that before carbs.

I love my Honda 50 HP. It starts and runs great, is quiet and great on gas.
