I have a 1985 15hp Evinrude with a slight problem. The motor starts fine but when it gets going a top rpm the engine will slow down and then speed back up to top rpm. I ran all the gas out of the gas lines the last time I used it so there wasn't any gas in the gas line over the winter (I store the motor in my basement). I have checked to be sure the air vent was open on the tank and can't think of any other possible cause. The gas in my tank is a year old but I did use a fuel stabilizer.

Might check the screen on the filter hosing before it goes in the carb. I had the same problem on a 15hp johnson (89) just had a small particle in the screen area. It doesn't take much..

I had the same problem about a year ago. I took it to a dealer he told me my "jets" were gummed up. He cleaned them and charged $30. It worked fine after that but I have no idea how he "cleaned" them.

Heck...to clean out the carb, jets, float, cylinders and such all through the engine fuel system, get a can of SEA FOAM.

Items you will need:
-a small funnel (like for filling a coleman lantern or stove)
-a small rubber tube that can fit on the end of the funnel.

OR: go get a can of mercury "powertune" or the OMC equivalent.

With the carbuerator accessible (i.e...take off the air intake cover so that you can see the butterfly in the carb), start the motor and increase throttle slightly (like a high idle). Insert the hose/funnel system into the air intake of the carb and slowly pour the sea foam in. The motor will start to flood over, and lots of white smoke will come out. Continue to do so for about 1/3 of the can...then pour faster until the motor floods out. Let the stuff sit for about 15 minutes, then restart the engine (on water) . Run motor at full throttle for about 5 to 10 minutes and any gunk, sludge, etc will be burned out...

So...something good to try. If it doesn't work, at least your motor will be clean through the fuel system.
