In theory, at least, there should be no more problem with carbon buildup in a 4-stroke outboard than in an automobile engine. If you suspect that prolonged icling is causing a buildup, an automobile gasoline additive would be correct.
If you like buying from a marine dealeer, OMC's Carbon Guard is labelled as being correct for both 2 and 4-stroke engines. Otherwise, any of the "injector cleaner" products from an auto supply store should be good. Most of that stuff is just penetrating oil in an different can, anyway.

Good question,I'm trying to figure that out myself. I've been told to use Yamaha Ring free, but at $7.95 for 12oz forget it. If I remember right I think it called for 2oz per gallon(shock treatment)times 36 of fuel, thats over forty bucks a tank. OMC Carbon Guard is a good product for less money. I'm in the process of trying the Sea Foam,to early to tell if its working yet.Good Luck!

you can use TECTRON by Cheveron ,it's in the black bottle. There are 2 diff. strenghts ,fuel inj. cleaner {weak} nand the valve/combustion cleaner (strong) I have seen someone post that they think Yamaha buys TECTRON and puts their name on it .Must smell the same??

I started using 1 oz of Sea Foam per gallon in my tank to help a 175 Johnson that was coughing & sputtering. It took care of that problem but as an added bonus it helped my 9.9 hp Yammie 4-stroke that feeds at the same tank. Both motors seem to run a lot smoother now with less hesitation and sputtering at low RPM's. I only use it in every other tank of gas. (39 gallon on a Crestliner).

I use Sea Foam in all my engines and it works like a charm. FYI - you can pick it up at any NAPA store.
