I am thinking about buying a boat with a 150 yamaha and a 9.9 four stroke kicker motor. I was just wondering how Yamaha motors compare to Mercury. I was thinking of maybe switching to Yamaha outboards instead of Mercury because it sounds like there is a lot of problems happening with Mercury and very few problems with Yamaha. Any input on whether Mercury or Yamaha would be the better choice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I was faced with this decision when I bought my new Lund this spring. I had a 1995 Mercury on my old boat, had no problems, but after hearing of all the problems the new Opti-max was having, I decided on the Yamaha, and have not regreted this decision. It was hard for me because I've always owned Mercurys.

I have the 98 V-Max and 97 9.9 and short of some cooling problems with the 9.9 everything has been great. New plugs every year, Yammy decarbonizer every other tank of 87 octane fuel and they run like champs.
Test drive more than once and for a long time and ask questions and more questions and more questions about the boat you want to purchase used.
I was lucky and test drove for 3 hours total which help a lot compared to the garden hose and run in the driveway I was shown by some.

I think a better question should be how do the Mercs compare to Yamaha.
