Dang Kids! We have to bait your hooks, take the fish off when you do reel one in, and keep both eyes on you at all times. No wonder we don't catch anything all by ourselves. We actually catch all the fish. We just allow you to reel them in! Dang Kids!

As usual Nate you're stretching things a bit. I'll test you tomorrow. If you don't catch a walleye, you don't get to eat. OK"

hey now, we ain't talkin bout 5 year olds outfishin pops on their first few trips (you would be wise not to fish in those situations) I am a 30 year old son who can fish circles around my dad almost any day, and my father-in-law 7 out of 10 times! I remember one trip last fall when I cuaght a dozen fish when they both got skunked---Ok all my fish were F.W. Dumb but they were fish!!

they both insisted it was luck but come on- what are the odds of a single angler hooking the only twelve fish of the day when all three people are using identical rigs and bait and similar equipment

Seems like Nate and his Dad are just having some fun with this one but here's my two cents. When I was younger and fishing with Dad, he always made sure that I got to do most of the CATCHING - especially if he hooked a big one. As I got a little older, we did more trolling and it was amazing how many times it happened to be "my turn" when the big one hit. Dad was usually driving the boat before we had an autopilot so I still got to do most of the catching. The last couple of years it has been payback time! When we are out on my boat trolling, he still likes to drive the boat - actually keep an eye on the autopilot while I run the deck. When we get a fish on, Dad always gets first crack at it and usually he reels in 3 to my 1. Something he figured out a long time ago and I have caught on to in the last couple years - you don't necessarily have to be the one that reels the fish in to have caught it. He used to say they all counted for him when we were on his boat, and I guess that is kind of the way I approach it now. Hope your DAD gets some big ones!

I feel the same way your dad does about not having to catch the fish. When I am in my boat, just putting my partners onto fish makes me feel pretty darn good.

that is precisly why some people don't think trolling a spread is fishing. but meerly reeling in fish cuaght by the boat.

ethical delema: if 2 people are troling in a boat and catch their limit but only one of the fishermen reel in all the fish is he 2 times over the limit? or when all but the last fish are cuaght do half of the rods need to be taken out of service?

no real concern by me just, shal we say, over analizing the situation, and having a little fun :-)

Nate, my daughter caught on to this trick along time ago. Every time I handed her my rod "to hang on to it" while I did something, the fish just seemed to hit at that instant. She would reel them in and Dad never caught nothing. Looks to me like you haven't quite seen the light, yet. Challenge the "Old Man" to a true tournament. You each can put the same amount in the kitty or maybe all the lawnmowing for June on the line. I bet you'd see his true ability then. Is he possibly giving you first shot at all the choice spots? Are you actually fishing equal, or is he doing all the rigging and you're holding the poles? I don't think we're getting the full story here. I don't believe your dad can't catch a fish. I think he's making you feel good. If I'm wrong, I apologize for doubting you.
