I am heading north next weekend to fish for Pike and Walleye on Waubay SD. Last year at this time of the year we caught several small pike on jigs. The pike would not seem to hit a spoon, spinner bait or any other horizontal presentation. What is a good larger profile jig combo for BIG PIKE? I thought about trying bass jigs, but what would be a good trailer?

Try the large premium bucktail jigs offered by Cabela's - p 128.

I've had some luck with big 4" and 5" grubs (white) with twister tail fished on deep weedlines.

Have caught more pike using a 1/4 oz jig and yellow double tail tipped with a piece of smelt or minnow than using everything else in my box. Find some cabbage and coontail weeds and cast and jig or drift and vertical jig. Have fun!!
Had good luck last year with the following set up.
Most any heavier (3/8 or 1/2oz) weedless bass jig with a 4-6 inch live minnow. Find weeds and drop jig/minnow right down in thick of it and vertical jig or just shake it.

There are standup, weedless jigs prerigged w/ braided steel leaders specifically for large pike and muskie. They have a heavy wire hook w/ a large gap. Also special plastics sold specifically for this purpose made from tougher plastic that is more resistant to being destroyed on each fish. Very large (saltwater type) plastic grubs fished on a spoon like a jig are also effective. Might also try this post on the muskie board.

I've been using a bucktail jig made by Mack's Lure out of WA. It's my understanding that they use them for Steelhead out West, but the Pike sure love em here in MI. They come in all sorts of colors, or Black with a few strands of color with flash. The part I like best is the eyes are "Glow". Maybe there's a dealer near you that carries them. Good Luck
