The tilt/trim on my 1998 Merc 115 ELPTO is acting strange. It will tilt up, but won't tilt down. Doesn't matter which switch I use (motor or control). I can hear the circuits clicking when I hit the switch for down. I noticed that at first it wouldn't work for about 1 out of ten times I would try to tilt/trim it down, but just thought I didn't push the switch down hard enough. Well, now it works about 1 out of 10 times. Plenty of fluid when I checked it.

Any one experience this problem before?

Eric, It sounds like you have a bad trim selinoid. Just remember the blue is for up and the green is for down. R,P,

Is this something that I could replace or are there any special tools?

You might have a bad solenoid which is no big deal to replace. I would grab a VOM and make a few checks before changing it out. You said you could hear it clicking so I would suspect that your control ckt is good but check it anyway by measuring from the green wire to gnd for battery voltage (a bit more than 12volts when you push the button. Also check to other side of the control ckt for a solid ground..(w/o the button pushed). You could also check across the control coil for continuity using the ohms scale and look for something reading just a few ohms. The high amp side of the solenoid should also be checked for good voltage. The same voltage would be present on the output side of the solenoid when the button is pushed if you lift the lead going to the starter. If everything cks OK to this point...your solenoid is good. Most of these problems end up being low voltage due to poor connections or wiring.
