I am thinking of getting some of the shakespeare reels and want to know how they compare to the likes of diawa, shimano ,okuma and cabelas reel on a marks out of 10 basis (i know the diawa will be a 10 ) but if anyone could list the pros and cons of the various line counter reels and give them a mark out of 10 i would be most gratful. thanks james.

James,
I own a couple of Cabela's line counters. They are just ok. One of them has developed a grind in it when reeling in. And the free spooling lever has a funny glitch that makes you have to reel forward before you can release it to free spool. Other than that they are alright I guess. But not as good as I had hoped when I bought them. They aren't for instance a Penn 209 with a line counter. My 209's just keep going and going. Very well made. I'll probably have to send the one of them back to Cabela's. It's just a big hassel. I wish they were a little better quality. But for the price........ As for the line counter style of reel. I LOVE THEM!

just bought two of the shakespeares and spooled them up with leadcore. only used them once and they seem ok. can't beat the price, $40 compared to $93 for a daiwa 27LC. I have 8 daiwas, the shakespeare defianetly does not compare in quality but seems alright.

Altho I have never used shakespeare's linecounter reels, I have seen similar threads in the past and the verdivt is always the same:
Go Diawa or nothing at all. You will end up buying many cheap shakespeare's/Okiwhatevers in the time that one diawa will last. You will also have to deal with the frustration of owning junk.

I own diawas and have no complaints.

and I own Okumas(4 of them) and have no complaints. It all depends on how much you are going to use the reels. I suppose I use the Okumas 15 to 30 times a year, they work well and have a quality range that should, and so far have, last at this rate. If you use a linecounter every day, all summer long, then I would guess the Daiwas would be your best bet. The Shakespears are a decent quality reel that should last at the rate of 10 to 40 times(a guess) per year. Then factor in the cost of the individual reels. Then decide what will work for you. In my case the cost of the Daiwas weren't acceptable over the number of times I would use the linecounter. I have used the Okumas for two years at a rate of 15 to 30 per year, and they seem to be holding up well, are they the best out there, not by a long shot, but do they do what I want them to do, Yes..........end of story!
