I have just finished a fishing vacation in which I was very fortunate to fish 9 of last 13 days. Needless to say many of us who are so lucky in handling lots of walleye and getting stabbed by hooks and eyes have some very rough chapped hands. Are there any lotions, listed by brand name that you use that can get those hands back to soft again??
What a wonderful vacation. We had days where there was a walleye for every cast when pitching jigs into one and two feet of water here on the missouri river. Unfortunately except for one day nothing was over 18 inches. 40 to 60 walleye a day was not uncommon and it never got boring. I'm ready for tackling some bigger fish and in a REAL NEED for your suggestions on that hand lotion that will get rid of these sandpaper hands.

We use Eucerin. The hospitals do as well.It is alcohol free, purfume free, and not very "greasy". To heal get some loose fitting rubber or plastic gloves and apply liberal amounts to both hands, massage thoroghly then put gloves on and hit the hay!
Do this two or three nights in a row and use it in the normal way throughout your day and they will good to go!
It is important to wash hands with soap and water after each outing and use the lotion after washing.
I do these things and don't have any complaints from my wife about rough hands.
Good luck, Steve

I would recommend using the Eucerin as well. I am a pharmacist at a hospital and we use a generic brand called Hydrocerin(moisturizing emollient). I use it daily on my face and hands, works great. I would go one step further and recommend the cream if you can find it. I think the lotion is a little greasy and the cream seems to hold the moisture a little better. You can get jars of the creams at most drug stores. There is also a brand of hand cream made in Montana made of bee's wax. The stuff is unreal, but I'm not sure of the name or where to order it. I have heard nothing but good things from people who use it, I will try and find the name and get back to you.

In the farm supplies area at Farm and Fleet you can find a cream called Udder Butter. It's used on the udders of cow's for when they are chapped from nursing the little ones. This works great for chapped hands. I've used it, and have no complaints. It will heal your hands fast.
At night, put some Neosporan (sp?) and band-aids on the cuts. This will keep the cuts from scarring, or at least reduce the chance of having a gazillion little scars all over your hands.
Glad to hear you had such a successful outing! Way to go!

I agree with Juls. Just looked for mine to get the correct name and could not find it. Will heal your hands up in a day or so.
Don't laugh but its great for kids diaper rash as we used it
25 years ago on the kids when nothing else worked.

juls is correct to tell you about using products for cows
udders because they chap alot and they need to be "not chapped"
..there are a few brands so look in the vets section at farm
type stores.
but remember neutragena hand lotion...norwiegian fishermen
use it to make their hands soft and smooth. and havent we
always wanted the hands of norwiegian arctic fishermen.
glad to hear you had a good fishin vacation. walleye cuts
are badges of honor you know....

I agree with Jules too about the udder cream, but buy it at a vet clinic because they have the real stuff. Many times farm stores have "imposters" and they don't work as well.
I've also heard about a new soybean-based lotion, it's called soysoft, but I haven't used it yet as we can't see the bottom of our udder cream yet.
Glad you had such a good time fishing!

For years now I have used a product that comes in a
green square can call "Bag Balm". Just like above post
it is used on a cows udders. The stuff works wonders
in a very short time, usually overnight. I get the chapped
hands ice fishing and summer fishing. Nels

I also agree with the Udder Balm. Another good one to try is Sween Cream. I have gotten that from medical supply stores.
Also for those little cuts I use this stuff made by Watkins. It's called Petro-Carbo. My mom has been cursed with hands that crack and bleed for no reason. She uses udder balm and then the Petro-Carbo salve at night. Works like magic.
Good luck,
Lisa

I have used Bag Balm for years too and it works. It is greasy though. My mother (bless her heart) just found a different one that is less greasy though. It's called "Burt's Bees hand salve". It works pretty well but smells like lemon tea. Looking at the can right now and it has a web site (I haven't seen it yet) www.burtsbees.com
If anyone is interested where it is sold email me and I'll ask her where she found it.

I agree with all the above posts...I also use some stuff called Cornhuskers Lotion... I'm looking forward to having some sore hands in a few weeks when I get up north and handle some of those toothy eyes as well....
Happy Fishing!

Just checked out the web site and there is a map of the USA with a listing of retailers carrying their product.

The real stuff is Naylor's Bag Balm, but there are several other bag balms out there. "Milkhouse Products" company makes a pretty good one called just "Udder Cream", it smells like rose peddles. The Mills Fleet Farm stores carry all these products, including the Naylor's.

I don't use lotion to help heal my hands after long periods of fishing very often. I haven't had to since I bought a pait of fish handling gloves.
The gloves do not even have to be actually for that use. But anything that is fairly water resistant, leather, and fits comfortably work great.
I have a pair of Snap-On Mechanics gloves that I love to use when handling fish. They are snug enough fiting and thin enough material that I can really still keep good feel with my fingers and rest of my hand.

There was a product listed in the In-Sider a few issues back listing a lotion to repair fish hands. FYI, I just returned from Winnebago with my girlfriend and I was amazed at how well the new Lindy glove worked on over 20 walleyes handled. My girlfriend also overcame her fear of holding a walleye for photos after she tried the glove for the first time.
Sincerely,
John
