Anyone know the process you must go through (paperwork and such) when selling your boat to someone? How do you transfer the title so the buyer can drive it home legally? Please advise with specifics. Thanks.

Go to a Notary that handles vehicle registration and titling. They have the proper forms necessary to transfer.

Assuming that it hasn't been pledged as collateral to anyone - a simple bill of sale will be sufficient. It should list the following:

1. Names of Seller and Purchaser;
2. Purchase Price;
3. Year/make/model/serial number of boat, motor and trailer;
4. Date of Sale;
5. Both seller and Purchaser should sign it.

Where I live, there is a transfer of ownership section on vehicle licence plate registrations, which you would have to complete to allow change of ownership of the trailer (if you have this). Even with this form, I would still recommend a bill of sale be drawn up. If you search "bill of sale" on the net, you will probably find a free sample which you can create yours from, or, if you have a buddy that's a lawyer, ask him for a precedent bill of sale.

In most places, this should do.

In MN, the buyer only pays tax on the trailer, so depending upon where you are located, you may want to itemize the purchase price for the boat, motor, and trailer seperately.

Some other terminology you will want to add to the bill of sale, "All sales are final".
