View Full Version : Breaking in a 90hp 4-stroke
I'm picking up a 2002 Alumacraft 175TP with a 90 hp Mercury 4-stroke in two days. I'm concerned about breaking this motor in with temps in the low 40's. Can I hurt this motor if I break it in now? Does anyone know the procedure for the break in? I would like to use this boat in January for steelhead fishing on some Mich. rivers. Any suggestions and info. is greatly appreciated. Thanks (btw,,it's a tiller)

Change the oil and filter after 1 hour or your 1st outing Then change it again at hour 4-5. Don't use synthetic oil for about 30 hours of run time . Then switch over if you want to go that route. After about 1.5 hours of run time, go for alot of full throttle holeshots but don't go over 4,500 RPMs till about 3-4 hours of run time. This is to make sure you seat your piston rings.
