I've read some past posts about the hard steering on these boats. Did it improve any with the 2002 year, or get the hydraulic option ? Any other options I should consider ? This will be my last rig for a long time so I want to do it right. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I'd get the hydraulic steering I have a 1890 le with 175 hp and I hang on and crank to turn at wide open. The boat is a handfull my next one will have the hydraulic option.

To your main question- Get the hydraulic steering, it's cheaper to have the factory put it in than to pay your dealer to install it later. If you troll a lot, consider an autopilot. Get the top set, you'll be glad you did when it's raining, or the sun is boiling your brain. There is a sport package upgrade that gets you the top set, fire extinguisher and radio. You can upgrade the cheesy am/fm/cassette radio for a few more bucks, aren't cassette tapes going the way of the 8-track anyway? (You guys still playing those 8 tracks no angry emails ok?, lol!)

Max out the motor if you can- 135HP at a minimum for this boat, anything less and you may end up with buyers remorse.

Re: the hard steering on the 1800's, Mine was ordered with a 175 Opti, a 9.9 and hydraulic steering. The boat was very difficult to turn under high power during the initial check out run. I asked the dealer to raise the motor one hole, because it was mounted all the way down. This resulted in a huge improvement to steerability and a small gain to overall performance. I wonder how many other "hard steering" 1800's could benefit from this? Most of the time a dealer will initially mount a new motor all the way down.

Good luck with your boat purchase. Email me if I can help with any questions.

I have a 2001 1800 with a 150 ficht and 9.9, it steers great without the hydaulics.must have been set up right.I really like my boat, bought it out of Canada and saved over $8000 no bull. And they delivered it to my home! So look around.

My 2001 Lund 1800 steers great. I would agree with the others that you should spend your bucks on motors, motor rigging & top. I have a 115 and wish I had gotten the bigger 150. I did get the kicker setup with its own throttle, electric start, electric trim.

Good luck with your boat purchase.

I have a 2001 1700 fisherman and I got the hydraulic steering after demoing one without it. Maybe I'm just weak, but it made a big difference to me.

Thanks for the input guys. I just got these prices from the local dealer (central Ohio): 1800, Eagle bunk trailer, 175 Evinrude, mooring/travel cover @ $ 28,600. 1700, 150 Evinrude, same trailer and cover @ $ 23,100. No other options priced at this time, just trying to compare the basics, are these prices in line ?
