My motor calls for hypoid gear oil for the lower unit. Are all lower unit oils hypoid? What does hypoid mean?

John-
Hypoid describes gears which connect nonparallel, nonintersecting shafts, usually at right angles, as are found in a lower unit. The drive shaft and gear (y axis) engages the prop shaft forward and reverse gears (x axis). So, all lower unit oil is "hypoid".

Hypoid gears have more pressure between the gears so hypoid gear oil is designed for high pressure.
