I am heading to Morson over Memorial Day weekend for the first time. Hints, best locations, bait stores, etc needed.

Any good place to find a map of the area? Have looked and most maps have legends or a text box over that portion of the lake.

Thanks

Locations: Miles Bay - Horseshoe Island east side. Garden Island. Look around for the other boats and mark their locations. Basil Channel is a good spot, but it is quiet a run.

Bait shop located on the Morson Road on left. (old trailer house)

With the warm temps.................LOW out of Morson should be should be prime..............TGG will see you there. We will be at Redwing.....TGG

What resort are you fishing out of.....? You can head back east also to stay away from the big water.......but if you want to go west.......Dawson island the the adjcent channel is always good early in the year.......for evenings........run up off Raspberry islands...........Miles Bay is a bit of a push but holds walleyes and bigger northerns.......but you should get yourself a map....I bought what looks like a chart from the resort about 10 years ago........but it has all the islands and navagational markers on it.......cost about $20 at the time but has proved invaulable.....Have a good trip.....

Try the bait store in Baudette, can't remember the name but its next to the Holiday station. They should have a map of the area.
The Morson shopping center would probably have maps also.

Try around Rabbit Point and a few spots on the north side of Rabbit island to get started.

Miles Bay is all dinks.
In the spring the fish tend to stage in sand bays off the islands and land shore. Just run the area and look for these sand bays and pockets. Troll shad raps (5&7) or spinners with minnows. Fish 6-12-feet.
They won't move into the big water basin in front of Bueano Vista untill late June when the spelt move in. They come in from the Basil so check the south end down by Pork Point and Burnt.
You can run east and fish the current by Cedar Narrows and beyond but expect a lot of other boats.
The Matheson Bay humps don't hold fish till July.
For better fish, but a longer run, go to Rubber Island.

Thanks for the info. We are staying at the Buena Vista. I am the "new guy" in a group of 10-20 guys that go there every year.

Should be fun and looking forward to the nice weather and tugs on the lines.

Best regards

I fish Lake of the Woods about 4 to 5 trips a year and go out of Buena Vista and the owners of the resort are great the fishing has been excellent. I would recomend that you bring in some night crawlers. I have had great success pulling spinners on a 3 way up there. They vertical jig 1/2 ounce fire ball jigs a lot up there with minnows also. Because the daily possesion is 2 you might want to go down to Thompson creek and fish crappie fishing. By any of the islands in Miles Bay pitching jigs or shad raps you can find small mouth bass. I bought the Navionics map for my LMS1600 lowrance GPS for Lake of the Woods and it makes getting around the lake easy. Because ther are so many islands getting lost is easy to do. Also if you are looking for northerns go to the Obabicon lake. Last October a friend of mine went up there with me and caught a 50in Muskie crappie fishing and the resort has a picture on the cover of there news letter. Anything can happen when fishing up there so have fun.

PJM-
I'm curious about your Navionics map and 1600. Did you buy the map for the entire lake or just the portion you fish? I have the same GPS and also bought Navionics maps for 2 portions of LOTW. The map that's available for the entire lake required more memory than my 1600 has, unless I'm misunderstanding something. The partial area maps are ok, but it takes both maps to cover the areas I fish and it's a bit of a pain. Just curious what you've done. Do you know if more memory can be added to your 1600? Thanks.

Have been going up there over Memorial Day for the last 5 years. I have had much better success keying on sand and weeds rather than rocks that time of year. Have mainly jigged the 6 to 10 feet depths where you find a mix of sand and weeds. Have often had the best bites at high noon with a hot sun. We fished at night a few times but have had NO action to speak of. Green and Chartruse have been by far the best colors for us. Am going to try pulling cranks and spinner rigs with power bait crawlers to see how that works this year. Good luck maybe we will see you there. We stay at an island in Steven's Bay, so Miles is quite a haul.

Our group have been going to Buena Vista for the last 5 years and are very happy with the resort and quality of fishing. You can work the islands around the area and if fishing is tough go to Miles Bay (15 min. boat ride). About the only thing I could add is to bring a long extension cord for you charger. The marina can fill up fast and some outlets are a distance from your boat (100ft). Our group is going up over Memorial day, let us know how you did. Tight Lines!

Are you going to Buena Vista over Memorial Day? If that is the case, I won't have to tell you, we'll be there with ya. Since I don't know the bulk of these guys you might be one of them.

Look for the white Suburban with dark blue, green and purple arrows on the side towing a blue Lund with some Mepps & Rapala stickers on the side. The boat is half carpeted...long story. :-)

I only have the southeast section in my LMS 1600 because that is where I fish most of the time. The LMS 1600 has 2 megs of space and that is how big the southeast section is and you can't make it bigger. Now what I have done is bought from Navionic Hot Spots map for my X-15 of the whole lake because they had them on sale for $25.00 a piece also the X15 has a bigger memorey with the MCC cards. With those maps I can now go up to Firebag Island where walleye fishing is very good using my X 15 to navigate there. The navionic map Southeast in my 1600 does not cover that area you need the Southeast section and I would need to re download maps to cover that section to my 1600. The Navionics Hot Spots maps are very good but the regular Navionics maps that you have are a little better.

No, I have never met those gentlement. Our group mainly consists of Norwegians (Gunderson's, Amundson's) from the Otter Tail and Mpls area.

Concerning a map, I did purchase one at the resort 5 years ago that is excellant. Hot Spots do have a new map out with GPS, that can be purchased at Gander Mtn.

I thought that was too coincedental. The guy that is putting this together and has for the last 10+ years is named George as well. Thanks for the map info. I will check it out today at lunch. We leave next Wednesday. See you up there.

pjm,

Thanks for the info. To show my ignorance, what is an X-15? Is that a different GPS from the Lowrance 1600? The HotSpot map sounds interesting. Will it download into the 1600? I fish the area north of Big Island, from the NW point of Big Island east to Painted Rock Channel, and North to Poplar, Bay and Skiff Islands. The problem I have is the area I fish is split into two different Navionics maps, so I have to live currently with just having the one that covers MOST of the area I fish. I'd love to get something for the whole lake. We have ventured as far as Dawson Bay and Three Sisters area which is not on my current map.

That is a coincidence, not too many George's around. Our group will not be up there until Friday afternoon. See you up there!

I'm going up with a group that weekend to the Buena Vista too. Mainly Kolbs from Illinois and Minnesota but I'm making the trip this year out of Seattle. We'll have to compare notes.

Yeah, but what are the odds that there are 2 walleye fisherman named Gearge going to Buena Vista for their umteenth annual trip from the Twin Cities Over Memorial Day? :-)

Ya'll have a safe drive.
