I have been having trouble with line twist wile Im trolling lately. Im using Reef Runner Lil' Rippers on 10# Sensi-thin connected by a plain snap. Has anyone tried putting a barrel swivel a coulple feet ahead of the lure? Will I loose action? Will the lure just spin?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

My guess is that you are getting line twist from the line being stretched or reeling on the drag, You can eliminate the twists by taking the lure off and trolling about 150' of line with nothing on it for about 2 minutes. The twists will disappear. I don't think the swivel will correct your problem unless your lure is not tuned properly and is spinning around. I believe in tieing direct to the lure to maintain the proper action. Line twists happen but not I only have to worry about fixing it about 2 times a season.

Chris, I will many times place a small double swivel a few feet ahead of a crankbait and it has no effect on the cranks action. I routinely just use a plan snap at the crank so changing cranks is easy. As Hawgeye has indicated sounds like your crank bait is out of tune and hence the crank is rolling allot and creating the line twist. With a properly tuned crank you will have very little line twist.

The trick to solving this line twist problem is to figure out what is causing it. Is it being caused by the crank spinning or is it coming from a reeling problem? Putting a swivel in the line is a good idea just incase the crank gets fouled and starts to spin, but....It will not solve the "actual problem" that you now have. Keep asking yourself questions about how and why things happen. Ask questions like "Does it still twist if I change cranks? Do I keep reeling when the drag is slipping? Perhaps you are free spooling out a lot of line then slamming the reel into gear causing the crank to jump forward and foul up. If so, try getting the crank running true beside the boat them thumb the line out slowly. Keep Thinking and Keep Fishing.

Are you using a spinning reel or bait casting type. Spinning will twist more.

Try some Reel Magic. This will help a little by relaxing the line. Also maybe try some heavier line.

There is an article at the "dupont stren" web site about line twist.
