where does one find this measuring device. i have fished for years relying on the golden rule, and have a hard time being convinced that 18" is different from ruler to ruler, but....if it is going to be the norm in tourneys, best have one i spose. checked cabelas, reeds, basspro, etc... and no luck. anyone tell where they got theirs?

I think Gander Mountain has them, Galyans might. I got mine at Ozzies's Bait Shop in Isle.

On the back of my Judge Rule:
Lakeborne Tackle Co.
Prior Lake, MN
1-800-518-1164
I have looked at all of the above and called Lakeborne. Lakeborne said that they were behind and were hoping to ship soon. I also spoke with Thorne Brothers and they have been waiting since last October for their order. If you find a place with some let me know!
Good Luck!

i just found out the same thing - which make me wonder...if it is not that easy to come by, and the Golden Rule is in almost every boat, why have The Judge?!?! i am going to get it and look in St. Cloud at GM and will let everyone know if i find one there.

I have a Bass Cabela's "Lyin Tamer."
On the website it just referred to as the "Cabela's Aluminum Measuring Board."
It work just fine, is big enough and is cheap.

Just curious, when did 18" vary ever? The whole deal with Chris is a bummer, but I am hearing that one ruler is measuring different then another. 18" is 18". Pick and buy the one this IS 18" and end the debate. If one is less then or more then, throw it in the can and be done.
Just my thoughts.

i agree 100% aquaman, and have stated such in the previous columns relating to 18" = 18". i just know that if it is a standard measuring device, then you sure as heck can eliminate some nit picking. i am in total agreeance that 18" is the same no matter, just looking into the future if the need arises. i am in the wave wackers and they claim "the judge" as the official tool for measurement. i have never had a problem b4 with the golden rule and doubt i ever would, just maybe thinking too much.

I guess "it depends on what your definition of IS, is..."
Seems I've heard that somewhere before....
Didn't mean to be sarcastic, but I guess I'm getting tired of this. Let's move on.

I bought an aluminum yardstick at the hardware store, screwed it on the inside of the port gunwale -- hoping to find a walleye too big to measure using this method -- otherwise, put back the 'questionable' ones -- don't want people arguing over me like Chris Bahl (who the he11 is he anyhow?).

I tossed my aluminum ruler after comparing it to The Judge. Do NOT make the assumption that your ruler will be the same as The Judge. Mine was off by almost 1/8". I can't remember the brand but it had a gold adonized finish. If there is money on the line you better be using the official ruler or your asking for trouble. Or at least check your ruler against the official ruler of the tournament. In the circuit I fish, our director holds up The Judge before every tournament and says the fish will be measured on this ruler. Please check your ruler against this one to insure accuracy. That's smart. JC

I got mine at Tutt's in Garrison. Northwest side of Mille Lacs.
$25.99 for 30". They had several at the time. If your fishing Wave Wackers you'll be there anyway. Remember though the PWT tournament is up there next weekend. You may want to call first.
Good Luck. Vickie

You want to know what I use? A 4 foot section of white plastic gutter with a cap on one end and permanent marker lines drawn on the inside using my tape measure for accuracy. If my tape measure is off then there are about 20 decks and whole lot of basements, kitchens and bathrooms that are mis-measured. ;-)
With this system, I can lay the fish on it's back (does not flop around when upside down) in the gutter move the lips to the cap, pinch the tail, get a measurement and slide it right down the gutter back into the water. Slicker then....well, trailer bearings. But that would not be a tournament style device for sure or could it????

My gold aluminum ruler was off by 1/8" as well. I bought a Judge a couple of years ago to replace it after we came mighty close to being dq'd in a tourney.

hi fellas...
the way it was told to me is this...
one or the other has the nose end riveted to the ruler making
it impossible to move. the other is bent in a 90 degree angle
on the end.... the trouble seems to come over time the 90
degree angle could be bent some and that would change the
angle and thus the measurement.
i would have never thought of that..
i like aquamans idea with the gutter. i went to the blacksmith and had a piece of extruded running board material bent at a 90 degree angle (ooooops) and marked the 14, 16, 19 1/2, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 32 (wishful thinking) inch marks. so far i like it.

I was DQed thanks to the golden rule,it was off by 1/8 of an inch.I would have ended up winning the tournament even without that fish but they tossed the whole bag.The Judge is the one and only. All golden rules should be recalled and turned into beer cans!
