I have heard alot lately about how slow a 4 stroke will troll down to. Along with walleye fishing I also do some musky fishing where I speed troll. I have always used my 150 efi to troll with. I am thinking about getting a kicker motor. My question is on an 1850 Tyee how fast do you think a 9.9 four stroke will push this boat?

I have a 99 9.9 Evinrude 4 stroke on my 24ft. hardtop, which loaded with a 100 gals. of fuel weighs about 5000lbs. Wide open it will push my boat 4.5 mph. On a smaller and lighter boat such as yours you could double that on a flat day. Hopes that helps, good fishing,.

I don't know if these numbers will hold for your boat. I have a 21' Smokercraft with a 175 Merc and 9.9 HT Yamaha. My main fuel pickup fouled one day on lake Michigan and I came in at 7.5 mph at not quite full throttle. That was my GPS readout speed. I was glad to have a kicker that day. It will also go under 1 mph. It has been a reliable addition to my fishing arsenal.

I am running a Crestliner 1750 Fish Hawk with a 9.9 4 stroke "rude and a 70 Johnson, fully loaded. I push on inland resevoirs, where 9.9 rules, maxed out at 6.9 gps mph. Unfotunetely, the bottom end is 1.2 gps mph on flat calm, and alot of times I have to keep on popping the kickerin and out when I have to go slower. I have tried to put the main engine in gear to slow the boat down, and have resorted to using drift socks when I need to get slower with the kicker. I have used the electric bowmount at times, but when I am trolling bouncers, being up in front is a hassle.

You mightwant to try a smaller pitch prop and/or smaller diameter. A 9x8 or 8x8 ought to get you under 1 MPH.

Try a MK Autopilot 24V unit. Trolling from the rear of the boat is easy with one of their units. Just take the foot pedal into the cockpit with you. I did it for yers before purchasing a kicker/autopilot unit. I still do it when SLOW is the ticket.

Just a thought- do you put your main motor in reverse? That will lock the prop.I think if you put it in forward it will still turn. Also trim it all the way down. As was mentioned, a smaller pitch prop will help too. Good luck.

If the main motor is not running and you put it in the forward gear, the prop will not spin. When we are handlining, we put the main motor in gear, to lessen the chances of the wire getting caught in the prop.

1950 Tyee I/O, loaded and 3 people, lower unit down about 3/4 way in neutral (used as a rudder), 9.9 Merc kicker, 5.5 MPH, lower unit up, a little faster.

I have a Honda 15 kicker on my Alumacraft 17' and I have tuned the motor to idle down to creep the boat to a speed of less than 1 mph. This motor is so quiet, my fishing buddies who sit in the front of the boat always ask if the kicker was running. You can definitely speed troll with this unit too! Probably 8-10 mph.
