Thinking of putting a 2002 Yamaha 40hp 4 stroke tiller on a Lund 16ft Rebel. Is it a good choice ? I will be trolling for walleyes with crawler rigs . Will I be able to go slow enough ?
Thanks for your help people!

The computer generated data that I got on the F60 (which is a very similar engine) was... slowest trolling speed of 2.2 mph @700 rpm (on a 17' boat). This normally comes out a little high. I'm guessing you would be right around 1.8-2.1 with that set-up forward. Back trolling you would be able to get down slow enough for rigging.

I have a 25 Yamaha 4 stroke on the same boat. While I wish I had the 40 horse for traveling spot to spot, the 25 fishes great. I use this rig to fish smaller lakes, so top end speed was not a concern. With 2 people in the boat, I am guessing it runs in the low 20's. If you are going to be fishing decent sized lakes or running longer distances, I would recommend the 40. If it is a liitle fast for your trolling tastes, a drift sock will cure your problem. Plan on putting your gas tank up front, especially if you are alone. The dealership should be able to give you the extra hose required. Good Luck!

I have this motor on a 1650 Rebel-V which is larger and heavier than
the 16 Rebel. With an 11 pitch prop it just bearly goes as slow as I would like.I wish it went slower. But the shift lever on the tiller handle is very conveniant to shift in and out of gear to get a little better speed control. Not sure you will get it as slow as you want on the 16 Rebel which is a very lite boat. But its a heck of an engine,,love it!
I have a 30 HP 4 stroke on that boat with an 11 pitch prop. It trolls down to 1.1 to 1.3 mph. Back trolling in the .75+/- range.
