What would the effects be if I spool a reel with line larger than it is rated for? The spool is rated up to 8lb test line. Does this mean Mono? would 11lb test work, or would that be trouble? Thanks.

You can probably get by with 11-lb line just fine .... I'd spool it with a "limp" mono like Trilene XL or similar if you go over the 8-lb rating.

The heavier lines are stiffer, and on a small spool (tighter bend radius) may not "lay down" well, giving a loose load of line. Taking a strain on a heavy fish would then cause the line to bury it self in the underlying windings and give you casting problems.

Generally when they speak of 8lb test they mean diameter of the line. I have often over spooled my line with larger test line and the downfalls I have found is that you don't have as much line on the reel, you lose casting distance depending on how much bigger of line you go up, and it has a tendency to come of the spool in chunks and not smoothly. 4EYESONLY
