Would appreciate any pros and cons on the Garmin 160 or Garmin 240 Locaters. Thanks

Sorry ... I cannot help you with those two particular locators. However, I can tell you that I have a Garmin GPS unit. I have had Eagle and Magellan GPS units in the past, and the Garmin has them beat hands down for ease of use. I also did a lot of research and talking to knowledgable sales people before I bought the Garmin and I should tell you that all of them liked Garmin and its rep better than Lowrance and Magellan (for GPS and Locators). Garmin has a rep for testing the heck out of its products before it puts them out for sale while Lowrance has the opposite reputation. Lowrance puts them out and then modifies them as its customers find bugs ... in fact, my sales contacts tell me that its "15" unit is being reworked now and that is after its 3rd software update ... and this is in its FIRST year on the market!!!

Hope this helped some.

The 240 has better resolution that is definitely worth the money. I normally run mine in split-screen mode with one side normal and the other side zoomed in 2 to 4 times near the bottom. You can really pick up a good idea what the structure is like too.

I am curious to rent another camera. A local lake has what appears to be an ice fishing house in 25 ft of water. I am curious to see if I am right. I've gone over this structure from north to south and east to west. It must be a good-sized shack!?! Anyhow, I am dying to find out if I'm right.

Good Luck!

I bought a Garmin 240 when they first came out was very disappointed with it. I went through 3 of the units in 4 months due to something not working right . After the third one I went to West Marine and got a store credit witch I used to buy a Lowrance X85. This unit has served me very well .

I've had a 240 for two years now, and I'm very impressed with it. Unlike some others folks, I have had zero problems with it from the day I installed it. The screen definition is very good because of the 240 pixels. I also run mine in split-screen all the time (normal on one side, 2X on the other). I got mine with the speed and temp transducer. The speed wheel can be calibrated, and is surprisingly accurate against my GPS.

The Lowrance X85 seems to be the unit most people compare the 240 to. Their specs are very similar (pixels, power, etc.) However, at the time I bought mine, the X85 was considerably more money. I have read posts that say the backlighting on the Lowrance is superior to the Garmin. I can't comment on that, having never used the X85, but I haven't found the 240 hard to read in low light.

For me, two fishy-smelling thumbs up for the Garmin 240!
