HAS ANYONE HAD OR SEEN THIS ON OTHER F115S.
OUT OF GEAR SMOOTH AS SILK.
IN GEAR AT LOW IDLE IT MAKES THE SAME SOUND AS IF YOU WERE PUTTING IT IN GEAR. WHEN YOU GIVE IT GAS IE,1500 RPMS SMOOTH AS SILK AGAIN.
MY DEALER HAS TRIED ALL THE NORMAL THINGS IE THROTTLE AJUSTMENT,LINK AND SINK AND LOWER END INSPECTION.BUT I STILL HAVE THE SOUND.
ON THE 18TH YAMAHA WILL SEND IN A FACTORY TEC TO FIX OR REPLACE MY MOTOR.THIS YAM HAS 11 HOURS ON IT WHAT A DISATFYING DEAL.

i have had concerns about the sound of some of my engines over the years while idling. sounds like something is lose or has slack in it.
jay anderson, the wizard from mercury's tournament support system, says it is from the heavy, stainless prop. no problems...just the heavier prop doing it's thing. do you have a stainless prop?
of course, this is one example and you could have more serious problems. jay says it is common for stainless props at low idle.

YES I HAVE A SS PROP
HAVE ANY OF THESE MOTORS BEEN 4 STROKS
YAMAHA SAID THEY DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER MOTORS BUT THEY DID ASK ABOUT THE SS PROP.

the lower end is the same i think. my ninety sounded kinda rough at the prop last year too. that was a fourstroke. no big deal. i usually am guilty of turning the idle way down.

jeez, Anxious, that was pretty harsh. The guy is looking for input. I would be worried too. I fish a long ways run from our input area and would be a tad concerned about that noise if that motor were mine. You might try to help and not just criticize.

The Yamaha dealer I talked with today said the 115 4-stroke Mercs and Yamahas were developed jointly and just have different cowlings. They run Yamaha heads and Merc lowers ... so I would guess that whatever that Merc expert said should apply to your Yamaha.

I hope this helps.

Last year I had been running a 3 blade SS prop with no noise, but I had picked up a 4 blade Trophy and it had a terrible vibraton at idle in gear, once I picked up rpm it went away, went back to a 3 blade prop went away, talked to a dealer he said that with a heavy prop on 4 stroke and the way the fire vs 2 stroke the harmonics I want to say is different. They need a softer hub vs the hard rubber. Have you tried the stock prop. I had my Yamaha 115 a year and half and love it.

Michael,

It's hard to tell without hearing it, and I don't want to rain on your parade, but mine (not a yammy 115) made the same sound last year. Since it seemed to go away I ignored it. Bad mistake. By the time I went to change the lower unit oil there were metal shavings in it. A tooth had chipped off and was grinding things up (probably when I grounded the prop on a sand bar duck hunting). Last summer I hit a log and took off the skeg. there was no abnormal noises and I had the skeg replaced. Things were fine for awhile, then guess what, same sound only it showed up @ 5600rpm. This time the gear broke in half and I had to get back under kicker power. Glad I bought insurance. It may not be this at all, but I would certainly look into it. Especially if you've hit something with the prop (even if there was no apparent damage at the time).
