Have a 2002 Mr Pike 17' and would like to know what shaft length I would need for a Minnkota 55AP, 48" or 54"? I am worried that the prop on the 48" would break water on some heavier waves, but don't want to have an excessive shaft length either.

Just purchased a 1675 Pro Sportmyself, Comparable in bow depth. Dealer says a 54 inch shaft will work great. I would not go less. There are some other threads fron the last few weeks asking the same questions you may want to review.

rvkraut,
Before everyone else chimes in and overwelmingly reccomends the 60" shaft, I'll tell you that I elected to go with a 54" shaft on my 2000 Crestliner SF 1750. I had the 60" shaft here and on the boat, but it was just too big. Mounted one way, it hung over the edge of the boat by a foot and mounted the other way, it took up some space in the bow of the boat. I could have split the difference but didn't like the looks of that either from a functional standpoint. I'm confident this 54" motor will meet 100% of my fishing needs. It should be mentioned that I do not position fish for walleyes very often and am not found fishing in three footers for walleye much either. For salmon, I'll put up with the big waves. Just my opinion and probably a minority opinion at that, as you'll soon find out!

I have 2001 Mr Pike, started out with 48" AP I had taken off my old boat, but after a summer of fishing MilleLacs and some larger lakes it was ot long enough, thoght 54, decided to go with a 60" 60# Pinpoint no problems now. As far as hanging over the side I moved my bow nav light back a couple of inches so I could position the motor along the side and also the motor is more to center for better tracking.
