There is a lot of units on the market, I'm looing for advice what model to get. I looked at the Garmin 168 GPS/map sounder and the lowrance-160 map/sonar unit. Any advice would be great.

I have lms-160.

I like it, but the sonar part is only 160 pixels, so not nearly as nice as our x-75... I know, you are saying duh! hehe... You're right. The GPS part works well, and the software is pretty decent (not great) for uploading the detail you want.

Not sure of the other model you mentioned. We like ours and it does a great job for us.

Good luck,

Jim,
I would go with the LMS160 over the Garmin. I work in a sporting goods store and have used both. The Lowrance unit has much better map detail and I thought it was easier to use. The CD also comes free with the Lowrance and with the Garmin you have to buy it seperately. I use the Globalmap 1600 on my boat which is the same unit as the LMS160, but without the sonar. The Garmin line is becoming very popular and I think it has a lot to do with the upfront price. When you compare the options, detail and ease of use I feel the LMS160 is the way to go.

Can you use navionics maps on the 160? Have you? Does it compare to C Map? I have C Map and love it. Before I bought it, the overwhelming majority I talked to said it was the best. I've not seen Navionics.

You can use the navionics maps with the LMS160. I have them in my Globalmap1600 and I was very impressed with the accuracy. I have only had a chance to use it on lake Minnetonka though. The bad thing about it is I can only have navionics maps in the unit at 1 time so you kind of have to plan ahead.

I have seen some complaints about not being able to zoom in far enough, but I had no problem, but it's my understanding that each lake is different on the range you can zoom in.
