Not sure where you are going but, I fish the reefs in the Northwest Angle of LOW in late July and early August. Usually have good luck slow trolling 1/2 oz bottom bouncers with gold or silver hammered spinners. For bait we use crawlers and leeches. You can also cast jigs tipped with minnows, leeches, or crawlers onto the rocks. We have done very weel with the spinner rigs.

We fish Lake of the Woods exclusively in July and August, need to know what part of the Lake you will be fishing? If you are fishing Big Traverse Bay try trolling #5 shad raps or wally divers. I usually use downriggers this time of year but you can also be successful trolling them with leadcore or longline trolling with fireline. I have even used small dipsy divers when I need to run with an extra rod, I only have 4 downriggers. Hope this info helps you out.

Good fishing

Ron, we go to Mylie's Place on Saboskong Bay every year in July. Our trip is geared to smallies which we catch and release. Our method catches us all the walleyes we want to eat while we're there. Two lures stand out and I'm sure there are 50 others. I take along a dozen Rebel Crayfish(medium 2-21/2"). They are Chartreuse with a green back. Also, another dozen Bandit crankbaits. The Bandit is a southern lure primarily (I think) but is readily available in Appleton, Wi. The Bandits I use are Firetigre, Crawfish, and your choice. I would imagine live bait would outfish us but if it works, don't fix it. Our method is quite simple. The wind is always blowing up there so we look for the wind to be blowing into a rubble point on one of the gazillion islands. Get in close and toss close to that rock; football to basketball size seems best. Another trick I learned from an Iowa cornfarmer: always carry a heavy duty casting rod (I use a 7'flippin stick) with a spinner bait. If you come on any nice weed beds, give them 5 or 10 pokes with the spinnerbait to see if anyone is home. I got a 47" muskie doing that 3 years ago. Sorry to be such a blabbermouth but you shouldn't go that far and come away dissapointed.
