I've got the need to teach a few boyscouts some different fishing line knots. I think at one time there was soemthing post here about some web-site that showed this. Does anybody remember that?

Tip for teaching knot tying techniques.

Go to a local hardware store. Buy some cheap shower curtain hooks. The little metal once. Then buy some rope. Not think stuff buy thick enough to handle and see good. Should have them cut at about 3 feet each. The curtain hooks act as hooks and the rope is your line. Great for young kids to learn the basics before trying the reel stuff.

Most local hardware stores would donate the stuff if they know what you are doing.

Tim,
When I teach kids how to tie knots, I start with the Palomar, mostly because it seems to be the easiest for them to learn. This helps to keep them from getting frustrated right away.

In addition to shower curtain rings, you can also use eyescrews, screwed into dowl rods 2-3 inches long, (be sure the eye is big enough to get the rope through a couple times).

I often bring 20lb test along, so if someone wants to try it with actual line they can.

Good Luck! Keri.

The dupont stren web site has a few knot diagrams. Print out a few copies of various knots for the kids. If the kids are fast learners and gung ho, also teach them to snell hooks. add another hook and you have a worm harness. add a few beads and a quick change clevis. etc. Be prepared, some kids catch on real sharp.

www.fish4fun.com/knots.htm has about a dozen step-by-step diagrams of different types of fishing knots for line and terminal tackle. We also have diagrams for navigation, boating safety sound signals, and waterway bouy markers which might be of interest to your group.
