I have a 2000 Alumacraft Trophysport 175 with a 99 Honda BF-130 4 stroke. I have had it for 1 season, and was wondering other's experience with this motor and/or boat. With the honda 17" pitch prop, the boat travels 41-42 mph gps. I initially thought I would get a little more speed, say upper 40's, from this combo. I've seen prop tests on other similar size boats with this motor, and they have been mid to upper 40's.

Overall, the boat and motor are great. However, the motor does make a whining/whirring/squealing type noise sometimes upon deceleration from full throttle. Not a mechanical type loud noise, but nonetheless, a noise which does not sound "normal." I finally got Honda to agree to cover the cost of a lake test by the dealer, so this spring I may know more about it. Anyone had any similar noises?

Also, the windshield on the boat has popped out of it's gasket 4-5 times when in rougher water. The original dealer simply pushed it back in. I have contacted another Alumacraft/Honda dealer who went to bat for me, and Alumacraft acknowledged a problem with this year, and they said they will replace the windshield.

Other that this, the boat and motor are great. Boat is great for fishing big or small water, and great for the family as well.

I am also looking for any suggestions for custom rigging. Right now, the rods kind of bounce around in the rod storage area. I would like to install some type of rod holder inside there, but am not sure what system would be best, and how to secure it inside. Any suggestions?

I have spent quite a bit of time in my father in laws' 175. The only difference, he has the 115 honda & kicker motor. We tested different props and came up with a 17P stilletto (spell?). He runs about the same speed you described, with 2 of us, using gps. We added a se sport fin, which really helped to get the boat on plane quicker.
The windsheilds are a problem. He lost his driver-side windshield running down the hiway. Screws pulled out. The dealer took another off a new boat and bolted them, both sides. No problem since.
A great riding boat. My only complaint, is the plastic dash & glove box. Does rattle & could have been made more durable.
Too many of the new boats are made for looks. I still like my old tyee, solid wood dash made flat so one can put trays on them. I see the new tyee's finally went back to the flat dash.
You will be happy with that combo. The honda is a sweet motor. Very quiet running down the lake. Great on gas!

Take care,

Brad

If the camshaft belt is toothed like on my 90 Honda, that's likely the whine you hear. Or maybe the valve train. There are a lot of moving parts to a 4-stroke engine, and my cowl isn't lined with foam to reduce the noise.
I have an old Alumacraft Trophy 175, which is a little larger than your boat, but flatter bottomed and maybe lighter. I can use a 19" aluminum prop with a 90 Honda. I don't consider regular Civics or Accords racing cars, so don't run my engine at the rated max rated 6000rpm. Peak torque on my 90 is 3800prm, so I cruise (waves permitting) at 4000-4200. With the 19" prop, I can turn 5300rpm or so.

Do your hear this same type of noise when decelerating? If so, what did you determine it was from, and did you do anything about it? I just want to make sure it is not something to be concerned about before the warranty expires.

What is your speed at 5300 rpm with the 90 HP, and what is the size of your boat? The 2000 is 17'6" long, and the beam is 89".
