I have a 89 Alumacraft Competitor with a 70 Merc 2 stroke that I purchased last year. I want to set it up with a trolling plate. I have seached the posts and found info on them, it seems like the Happy Troller is the favorite. Has anybody used the Troll-a-matic? It seems it would be easest to use with it's automatic up and down feature. I'm afraid I would forget and shear the pin or bend up a H Troller. Any imput??????

I have no experience with the two trolling plates that you have menioned, however, I have used the Tempress Fish-On! trolling plate and have had no problems with it. It is the type that will bend, but I have never had a problem getting it back into shape. I think I would rather do that than have to replace a shear pin. For the record, I have taken off with the plate down about a dozen times and it only bent once. You can notice it and recognize the problem right away. Good luck! Pat

Where did you get your trolling plate at?? I had not heard of that Brand at all. Is it made out of aluminum?

I bought my trolling plate used on ebay for about $40.00. I have seen them new for $79, but can't remember where. There are several available on eBay right now at

Don't get caught up in a bidding war. You can find some great deals otherwise. The Fish-On! is a heavy duty plate for sure! I'm not sure if it is aluminum though.

I just checked and it is powder coated aluminum and stainless steel. Keep in mind that it comes in two sizes. Small for up to 40HP and large for 40HP and over. Pat
