I have never used RAM products before, Im getting a new boat(used) and I plan on using RAM rod holders. I see in Cabelas that you can use a micro system with the RAM rod holder. Has anybody tried this?

It looks like it would be a pretty slick way to have rod holders mounted on your boat.

Any feedback would be appricated.

Thanks
WJ

Don't get the Ram tubes. I have six on my boat and wouldn't give ya two steamin country dumps for all of them.

For tube type rod holders you can't go wrong with Bert's (Pursuit Tackle?), Big Jons or Tite-Loks. I have found Tite-Loks to cost any where from 30% to %50 less that Bert's and Big Jons. Pat

Im not talking about the tubes, Im looking at the original rod holders. It looks like they habe a quick release strap and you can adjust them to any angle you want, They are on sale on Page 150 of the Master Spring Cabelas catalog for 29.99.

Jason,

Check out the RAM flush mounts. Looks like a more stable outfit to me. http://www.reedssports.com/Cgi-Bin/Webc.exe/Catalog/st_prod.html?p_prodid=2232&p_catid=689&sid=2Qs4R83

WJ, I have the holders you are referring to and I love them. When I first saw them I didn't think they would be sturdy enough but after using them, I plan on ordering them for my new rig. I have also had alot of people in my boat and I have not had a negative comment yet.
Good luck,
Sponge

WalleyeJason,

Make sure to check out some of the other threads on Ram Mounts, there is some question as to their strength or how sturdy they are. That may be just with the RamRod 2000 though. I know someone said the newer mounts were better but I havn't checked myself yet. For walleyes I would think they make a great mount especially at $10 off there regular price. Not sure how they would stand up to a 30lb King with a rod rigged with a super braid. You just better be careful with the drag as you would with any rod holder. Maybe they would work great, I just don't know from my own experience. Good Luck.

One concern I have with the flush mount is that you have to drill a huge hole in the gunnel, and water could very well get down inside the gunnel. Im not sure about this, but its just somthing I was thinking about. Not sure if it would drain into the bildge or not.

This is why I ask the great people of Walleye Central.

Thanks
WJ

Howdy,
I use the original RAM holders & also the RAM tubes. I do a lot of trolling pulling big Dipsey Divers on Erie. I have never had a problem. These are very well built & very versitle. I also use the Micro RAM mount for my electronics.

Walleye Jason- The RAM 2000 Flush Mounts have an excellent water plug. You will have no problems with water through the gunnels. RAM's are really strong- I've used them on my last three boats pulling flat lines, boards, and some dipsies with no problems. I've asked here on WC if anyone has ever had a RAM 2000 break during use and got no replies; something I can't say about another brand I used. When your line counter combo is teetering on the side of your boat it really gets your attention! Use a sharp 1 3/8" holesaw to drill your holes. There was some discussion here a few weeks ago on the RAMS. I have 4 Ram Rod 2000's the newest versions. I really like them, the only complaint I have is they "TWIST" too much in the bases. Both Flush and Side Mount. I recently purchased a Scotty Rodholder and noticed they are rock solid with no twisting in the bases. I took The Base of a SCOTTY and Bottom of a SCOTTY and Adapted the ROD Holder Portion of a RAM to work with it. What I did lose was the height of a RAM so I do not know how it will work until my new boat arrives. If anyone would like a Picture, drop me an email. EsoxTracker@msn.com

Jason, I have been using the original RAM rod holders (that look like ram horns) for 4 years. I have them mounted on a Tite-lok track system, 2 24" on the rear gunnel (Lund 1950 Tyee), 2 18" near the middle of the boat on both sides. This is an excellent system. It is infinitely adjustable and solid as a rock. There is some "twisting" to tighten, but once adjusted, they simply won't move. We troll Lake St. Clair for musky and have had absolutely NO problem. The track system is very nice in that they allow for a attractive step pad when not in use. In 4 years I have had no leaking problems. I did seal with weather stripping and silicon caulk in the drill holes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SYSTEM!!

Good Fishing!
