View Full Version : Western WC Together

Eric and I were talking about how much fun it would be to go to the anual get-together this year. It just isn't possible for us this summer. We would like to know if all the WC members in our region, Rocky Mnt states, Kansas, Nebraska, anyone who would like to attend, would be interested in a western get together, some time around the first week of October or late September.
If it looks like there is some interest we would be happy to put this together. Fall is the best time to fish this region for a variety of reasons. The weather is very stable and in the 70s. The hords of tourists and pleasure boaters are gone. And fish will be in predictable fall patterns.
Where will we meet? You guys tell me. Here are some options.
1. Glendo Resevoir
2. Seminole/Pathfinder
3. Lake McConaughy
These three areas are within a three hour drive of the Denver area, which would help us in making lodging arrangements.
I hope there is some interest, and I hope some of our fellow walleye hounds to the north of us can attend. It would be a blast to learn and fish with you guys. I was planning on asking Scott about this, but he has so much on his plate already, I would consider it a privelidge to put this together. What do you think?
I messed up the subject line. I meant Western WC Get-Together.

I'd be up for it! How about Yuba Res. in Utah? It's on the verge of suffering from a walleye over-population! I had a buddy take a 13 pounder from there (my boat, my newly found hole, his line--go figure!). And it has the biggest perch probably in the country! And it's close to home!! :) Has a local campground, with nearest lodging 1/2 hour away.
I'd be up for Colorado too.
Here are some Yuba fish:

I'd be up for it. Glendo sounds good, we would need to check the water level though. From what I've heard, they drop the water level at Glendo in the summer and it might not be back up by September. Have you bounced this off of Scott?

Not yet. I wanted to see if there was any interest first. We can always expand our location options, I just thought those three areas offered the best fishing in our region. I would be more than willing to invest some time in putting this together, it would be alot of fun.

Hey sounds great!! Will there be beer? And are we actually required to "catch" a walleye while there? I think someone sprayed the bottom of my boat with walleye repellant as a joke. It doesn't seem to effect crappie, small bass or drum though, just walleye. Las Vegas would be good location! Or Cabo san Lucas. Where ever it is, I'll be there.

Actually catching a walleye would be nice, but not manditory. Maybe one of you guys can show me what a walleye looks like, Ive forgotten. Even I can catch eye's at Glendo and Seminole. And yes there is one simple truth in the Universe, "there will be beer".

What about Lake Powell
Neal/CO
04-21-2000, 02:26 PM
Nice fish. We might have a hard time getting people to tow their rigs over the mountains from Nebraska and Kansas, but if thats where everybody wanted to meet, I would show up.

As long as it's not Coors!!!!!!!! ;-)

Powell isn't really known for its walleye fishing. They're in there, but difficult to target.
In May there's a chance to win a million bucks there by catching one of 20 tagged and planted stripers!! Odds of winning are about the same as playing the lottery, but a lot funner.

Too Cool!!! I love it.
Seminoe or Glendo would be my picks. They are close to me and I'm on the edge of getting fired everytime I go up North for a tourney as it is. Of the two, Glendo is by far my favorite.
Glendo is good fall fishing and the lake is more protected from the Wyoming wind. On the other hand, Seminoe is wide open and if the wind blows from any direction, you get it, but it's huge and the fishing is good, even the trout fishing.
You guys make the choice, but for me to be there it's gotta be one of those.
September 17 - 25 I'll be at Pepin (MWC). Before that is archery season and I really like my elk hunting (http://www.walleyecentral.com/elk.htm) So the best time for me is early October. But I don't want the get together to revolve around my schedule, whatever works for the majority will work for me... I still have elk meat in the freezer... but I really, really love archery elk. :-)
Let's do it! It's our turn.
Oh, and unless you live west of the rockies there are no mountains to deal with... we call those hills.

This sounds great. I vote for Lake McConaughy. The numbers of big fish caught their the last few years is incredible. No matter where it would be held, it would be fun.

I'm in !!!!!!! Sounds like a hoot. Glendo is real low that time of year but whatever everyone decides is fine with me.

ps. Hey Scott, Ill probably stop over today to empty a few 16oz cans.

Sounds like a great idea. A good time of the year too. My vote is for McConaughy but what ever the majority decides will be okay.

Last I heard (about 3 weeks ago) Prewitt was in the same situation as Jackson. The folks that own the water are negotiating with the State Parks
and until an agreement is reached, they are both closed. This was from a DOW fisheries biologist that said the stocking of walleye in those two lakes may not happen. Can understand not stocking if the public is not allowed to fish.

Just got into work this morning and am very pleased to see the responce so far. Sounds like the first or second week of October at either Glendo or Big Mac is what everybody would like. October is probably the nicest month weather wise. Not hot or cold. Lets do it.

Glad to hear you like the idea Scott. It wouldn't be a WC get-together without your attendence. Sounds like Glendo and Big Mac are what the majority are interested in. Eric voted for Prewit, but he was either joking or had been drinking.

I'm starting a pool.
Glendo + Wyoming wind + Eric's trihull + Eric thinking "Oh, it's not that windy!" = Time it takes for his boat to sink.
Who ever gets the closest without going over wins!
Just kidding! I'm in.

Hey Neal,
Where are you from ? I see your posts all the time and think we should get together for some "eye" huntin'. I seem to recall that it is somewhere around Denver. I am from Ft Collins and am always looking for someone to fish with. Will be picking my boat up this week and am going to spend the next two weeks breaking her in before tourney time. E-mail me and let me know.
Thanks

Lets narrow it down a bit now.
Oct 7,8,9 which is Fri, Sat, and Sunday or
Oct 13,14,15 which is Fri, Sat, and Sunday
Glendo or
McConauhy
We have plenty of time to put this together, but the sooner we set a date and location, the sooner people can make their plan to attend.

Early October is best for me. I've got an Idaho fishing trip scheduled for late October, and need to spread the two.
So Neal, you're officially the Team Lead for this, right? Can't wait!!

I would be more than happy to work on putting this together. Anybody who would like to help or offer suggestions feel free to E-mail me. I hope we have some WC people from all over show up, its going to be alot of fun.

AS long as it doesn't interfere with my elk hunting, it will be fine. Those two dates should be okay. Either lake will be fine. Big Mac will be a lot of jigging spoons.

RCL tourney is 1st week of Oct or I'd be in for a great WC get together. How about Yellowtail on the border of MT/WY and closer for UT, WA OR?

How's the northern pike and walleye fishing there that time of year?

I vote the 7th-9th. Big Mac preferably but Glendo fine too.

Either date is fine with me! Still surprised I didn't get more support on Vegas, but maybe next year (I guess that whole walleye thing may be a factor as to location?) Glendo sounds good!! Wonder if I can troll leadcore from behind a houseboat? Yep, I think the wife may stay home for this one!!

It looks like Big Mac is starting to rally?
EricCO
04-25-2000, 10:48 AM
A couple things:
At Big Mac it is illegal to have alcoholic beverages in the state park, so you have to hide the fact that your wasted.
The pattern at Big Mac that time of year is pretty simple, but wears your arm out slabbing all day.
I know the lake and can help those who haven't been there before, have a quality experience.
The Colorado Walleye Association is have a Fall Walleye Classic tourney sometime in October. Probably could get a big turn out if we have it the weekend before (prefishing).
I vote for Glendo because Neal raves about it and I have never been there.
(I was just joking about the Prewitt thing! I guess you would have to have fished it before to know it was a joke.)
I have never been to Glendo and would like to try something new.

I'm all for safety, but that seems a bit extreme to me.
I vote for the 13-15 of Oct at Glendo. Sounds like the place to be. I am a landlubber (only have a belly boat and have done ok off the shore at Pueblo in the past) and would need to hitch a ride (w/o bellyboat) on the water if anyone needs a navigator. I'll keep reading for more details as they happen.

I am just like you. I am a reformed trout fisherman who has fished mostly by wading and tubing. I have several friends who are hard core warm water fisherman and when I fish with them, that is when I get to sharpen what little boating skills I have. I use to fish quite abit out of a tube at Pueblo. It can be quite effective if you know the lake.
As we get a little farther along in this process I will compile a list of people with boats, who would like a fishing partner that weekend and those who would like to attend without a boat. Hopefully we can match everybody up.

I'll have a space for you in my boat, Neal. Sounds like you and Eric are better off separated!
I too still have, and use, my float tube! I use it mostly for flyfishing the Green River below Flaming Gorge. It's a great way to get down the river and leave your hands free to fish.
Right now with the ice starting to come off some high-mountain lakes there's not yet boat access, but you can get out with a tube and hammer the 'bows and cutts'.
