View Full Version : trolling motor
Two questions 16.5 ft lund w/ 50 hp 4st Merk
Trolling motor??
1.) Will a 12 volt pull my boards ok. (W/ plenty of speed)
2.) Will a 12 volt with 2 batteries for use.. last much longer than a 24 volt with its combined 2?
I found a 12 v 44 for sale... probebly not enough though.
Thanks,
Jess

Do yourself a favor and get the biggest one you can. I have a 17 ft crestliner fishhawk and a 48# 24 volt minnkota auto pilot. I love the motor, but wish it would have more trust. I can only go about 2 mph with no lines in the water. Before the 24 volt I had a 12 volt 40# and it would maybe go 1.2 mph. If I had it to do again I'd opt for the 74# unit and much better batteries.
I hope this helps.

You're not even close. A motor that size would severly limit what you could do in regard to trolling. I'd either recommend pulling the boards w/ your big motor, a small gas kicker or the biggest bow mount w/ long shaft electric 24 or 36 V unit you can find for what you describe. The 44 lb motor would be adequate for slower presentations that are less motor dependent.

I've been trolling with my bow mount since '95. My first rig was just a basic 16' aluminum fishing boat with a Minn Kota 812 Autopilot. With 2 batteries I could troll for about six hours at 1 to 1.3 mph. I now have a Pro V 1800 with a 65lb thrust Autopilot as compared to my first boat with 42 lbs of thrust. This latest set up is a 24 volt system with two Trojan deep cycle batteries. I can troll again for about six hours at about 1 to 1.5 mph. Hope this info helps.

Hers what I have. Lund Tyee 17' with a Minnkota PD 50 12v. I pull boards on Winnie and 1 charge will last at least 6hrs when I run it at the #8 setting. If its to rough for my electric I just fire up the 80 merc. I wanted 12v just for the convenience and for the way the battery compartment was laid out. It suits me fine.
Good luck!
