I'm going to Canada in 3 weeks and someone in my party said that you now have to have a passport or certified copy of birth certificate to get in? In the past 38 years, I've never even had to show my drivers license to be admitted.

No I never had to, if you bring a dog in you need the rabies shot record

You need one or the other, a drivers license will not do. Bring them along, you would hate to be turned around at the border. I dont understand why you havent needed these, I am asked for I.D. crossing both ways. You are entering a different country, they do not need a reason to turn you around.

you dont need a passport to get into canada. if you have
some kind of id like a drivers license it will be all you
need. you will want to bring a birth certificate for kids you
have along.

you dont want to have trouble at the border. and i hope you
dont...and i hope that i dont too

Agree with above. Who ever told you that might have been thinking about the requirements to obtain a Remote Area Crossing Permit, which would give you the ability to enter the approved region in Canada without going through customs. I get one every year and it covers Lake of the Woods and a little further east.

The above information is correct. The Birth Certificate is for a minor. You may also be required if you are traveling as a single parent with your child (no wife traveling with you) to have a letter stating that she has given permission to you to bring the minor across the border. I spent about 2 hours at a border crossing a few years ago (Pembina) because of the lack of a letter. As a pilot I deal with Customs on almost a weekly basis and the more paperwork you provide the less hassle you will receive. The only reason I said earlier was "may be required" is that you will have different requirements from different Custom officers. Again the adage, you can not provide too much paperwork. Better to be prepared than delayed.

Mac I have been to Canada many times and never have had to show an ID BUT I was told at the airport when entering one time that you should always take your passport or birth cert.any time you enter another country. They could if they wanted to turn you away. Thats what they said...
