Can walleye be smoked like salmon or trout? I would like to know before I try.

Sure, but they are awfully hard to light? Why would you want to?

I suppose any fish could be smoked, but a dry fish like walleye or northern probably wouldn't be very good eating.

Oily fish like salmonoids (salmon, tulibee, trout) seem to work better in the smoker.

Your probably right Hans but I am hoping to hear from someone with hands on experience. I'm dying to smoke some fish in my new smoker but the typical fish used for smoking are not readily available to me.

My pop puts northern on the smoker all the time, and it's great!

I would think a larger walleye would be better for this though. You know, like the big hawgs you get out of Lake Erie.

Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.

Just try it. Did the first person to smoke a salmon try to find out how good it tasted on walleye central? NO, he just did it. Now get smokin'!

By the way I am a new user as of today. I found out about this forum from a snowmobile forum I have been active on since December. I'm looking forward to learning and contributing to this forum in a respectful manner of course.

I smoked some walleye a few years ago just to try some thing different. It turned out pretty good,it was a little drier than alot of other fish that are smoked, kinda like a moist jerky, very tasty though. Will probably do some more this year, kids really liked it.

We smoke the little guys sometimes for a change. Don't brine the fish........more of a wood barbeque taste than anything else. Add a sprinkle of salt at the end. Tastes great.

OK SUZUKI. I have 25 yrs experience smoking fish, meats and a few other things in the 60's. All kidding aside you can smoke just about anything including hard boiled eggs and blocks of cheese. I have a great walleye recipe where you smoke it till it's half done and then bake it the rest of the way. everyone has different tastes. You just have to experiment till you find what you like. Lots of good books out there

You betcha they can. Cut the heads off, then gut em' out. Then, make one cut down the back. (this is so it opens up nice) Then soak em' in a heavy salt-water brine. (over night in frig) Then rinse em' off and brush some olive oil on the meat. Then, the most important part: Mix up a cup of brown sugar with 1/4 cup of soy sauce in a bowl and put a light coating of it on the meat of the fish also. Now their ready to smoke! MMMMMM! EE

I have smoked them a few times and find you need to do them real slow or they dry out badly, my electric smoker does salmon in 3 hours. i do the walleye when its cold outside so the smoker doesnt get as hot and takes about 7 hours to finish the walleye(big ones) same recipe as salmon...good luck...Bob

GoWyo, It's hard to give a pound/hour smoke time. If I were to smoke up a rack of 2 pound eyes, it would take about 5 hours. Temp. works best at about 175 degrees. (The olive oil keeps em' from dryin' out to fast). In MHO, the best smoke flavor comes from Hickory chips, but anything will do. Gotta go, I'm gettin' too hungry for smoked anything! Enjoy! EE

The question is... Would you really want to ruin a good peace of meat doing that?
