I need to remove my '97 Merc 200hp EFI from my Lund but upon removing the cowl, I haven't been able to find any good bolts to secure a lifting ring. I really don't want to pull any head bolts if I don't need to. Anybody been here/done this? Thanks.

You have to install an eye ring in the threaded area on top fly wheel -don't remove any head bolts or lift it any other way.

O.K., there is one large nut (approx 3/4") in the center that I would assume holds the flywheel and then there are 3 (approx. 1/4") threaded holes into the flywheel itself circling the larger nut. Do I use the 1/4" holes?
Thanks

Don't use the 1/4" holes for lifting your 500 lb motor. Take another gander under the hood and look for lift rings already installed usually front and back because somebody installed that motor to begin with and used lift rings to do this. I don't know nothing about mercs but I do know not to use 1/4" bolts for this application.
Good luck on you work

The Merc dealer near my house carries shop manuals for just about any Merc outboard ever made. A little pricey, but well worth it.

The answer is simple. Look up an authorized Merc dealer in your phone book and call and ask for the service dept. Simply ask them. They will tell you. Usually you have to remove the flywheel cover and there is a threaded hole in the top of the flywheel. There is an eye ring that you need to buy to screw into that. They're about $35.00. Good luck and be careful what you lift it from. They are heavy!!

This is correct Doug. Under the cover there is a large nut in the center. You will notice in the middle of the nut it is threaded. This is where the eye ring goes. A good manual for your motor is a good investment or a good local authorized tech. Good luck !!!

I have 96 150 that I assume is the same. In the very center of the flywheel there is a threaded sleeve, probably has a yellow plastic cap on it, that a mercury lifting eye threads into it. I have borrowed my local dealers eye for the price of a 12 pack of bud, make sure you reseal your bolt hole on the transom real good when you reinstall..an auto engine lift work great for lifting the motor....
