View Full Version : Question for Gary Gray
1895 Storm

Gary
Do you run a gas kicker on your boat? If so, are your using a kicker bracket? Is one needed? I'm wondering if I can get a kicker to work on an 1895 BT with a 125 and and a 15 HO kicker without a bracket?
Thanks in advance

I just bought an 1895 Storm BT with a 115 Yamaha and I am going to by a kicker bracket for mine. There is just not enough room for my 9.9 Merc 4 stroke without hitting either the kicker or the main engine when trying to make a sharp turn. My dealer said there was plenty of room when I ordered it but the reality of it is IF you want to do it the RIGHT way, you'll need a kicker bracket. Now Im wondering which kind to get and how much set back I will need. Any advice Gary?
Brian, when do you plan on getting your new rig in the water? I still haven't found any prop info for running a stainless.

I had my dealer put a 3 blade Yamaha stainless on it when I bought it. I'm looking to get it wet this next Monday or Tuesday. Im off for "Spring Break". SRJ, do I know you (or you me?).
Only thru Walleye Central I expect. I'm in northern MN with 3 feet of ice but my boat came in last week and will have the Yammie on it by this weekend. I suspect an 18 will be the right ss prop but I think they go right from 17 to 19. I know a couple guys running a 115 but only with aluminum-usually need 1 size down with ss. Do you know what size your dealer put on?

Yes, I run a kicker gas engine on my Storm. I run a 15 hp 2 stroke.
I think you would have enough room for a 2 stroke, but the 4 stroke cowling is a lot bigger. Will Lage, and Lance Lemmen, both run the storm, and run 9.9 kickers(4-stroke), but they use the Panther lift bracket. It is hydraulic, plus it is a setback plate.
Hope this helps,

I believe the 19 pitch would be your best choice, Don't know a lot about the Yamaha, but with the Mercury's, it's the prop of choice for 115.
Hope this helps,

I run a 192 Michigan and have a Mercury 15 hp 4-stroke on it. I put the panther lift on it and have been realy happy with it. The setback gives the kicker enough room to turn w/o hitting the main motor. The bracket is definetly strong. Had someone hit the kicker directly with a jet ski while I was siting still in the water. Busted up the kicker pretty good and snapped the tiller handle right off, but didn't move the panther lift at all, and it held the kicker in place.

Why the 2-stroke preference? Just curious.

I think you may have mis-interpreted the response. The 4 stroke has a bigger cowling (motor cover) and might not fit without hitting the main motor. In the trolling game, 4 stroke is it. This is a case where you definately get what you pay for.
Hope I answered your question,
I think Todd was wondering why Gary Gray doesn't use a 4-stroke kicker. Gary likes to troll, and for trolling, 4-stroke is the way to go. Just seems odd that he'd use a 2-stroke.

Exactly. I just can't see buying a 2 stroke small motor anymore. Wondered what I was missing.

I run a 2-Stroke 8hp on my 1895 and it works great. Trolls like a dream and idles down to about nothing. Also, I have an in line oil injection reservoir. Really works slick. Less weight and smaller in size. I will give you the edge on the smoke thing though. If you have a windless day and your trying to backtroll it can get a little smoky. I usually go with the bow trolling motor instead.
