I'm considering buying a 20 Lund Alaskan tiller. I've got a 60hp 4-stroke Suzuki that I'd like to put on the transom. Any idea of what top end speed might be? Will this be enough power for this boat (it's rated for an 80)?

The general rule is to not have less than 20% of the max rated HP. But that Suzuki is a strong motor and I would think it would power it very well. My neighbor had an 18' Alaskan with a 40 HP and could hit the low 30's with two people and gear. I would think you could expect the same.

I am on my second 20 ft Alaskan (center console). Both boats have been with 90 hp 2-stroke Mercurys .

Top end is 40 on the GPS .
Trolling 1.5 - 2.2

The new 4-strokes are just different enough that predictions of performance to the 2-strokes are difficult to predict .

A sea trial is really the only way to be sure .

Insist on some water time before you buy .

Good Luck with your purchase .

What pitch and make of prop are you using? I have a 2002 20' alaskan tiller and don't think I have the right prop. Would like to find the best prop with out installing a tach. Any help would be appreciated.

I run a 20 alaskan tiller with a 70 suzuki 4 stroke. I get around 31 mph out of it loaded. Suzuki fuel injection provides what I consider to be tremendous snap for a 70. 60 suzuki is basically the same motor, with a lower top rpm band. The 20 alaskan hull is not a real deep v, with a 6 degree deadrise I believe. This makes it a real planing type of hull. The 70 puts this boat on plane with ease, with what I consider to be impressive performance for such a large boat with relatively moderate horsepower. Before I bought this boat I talked to lund, and they tested the boat, with an average load and 50 hp, which produced good mid 20's speed and respectable hole shot. In talking with their engineers, was told that the boat was designed for more moderate horsepower in a tiller. You won't have to look too hard to find many of these ssv 20 alaskan's at resorts in a tiller with a 50 on them. I talked to some of them last year before I bought mine, and they were all very pleased. I too was concerned about going less than max horse, considered the 80 yamaha vs the 70 suzuki. I really wanted the suzuki, but didn't want to be dissapointed. I have been totally satisfied with every aspect of my purchase. The "max horse" formulas and arguments, in my opinion are far more applicable to deeper v performance boats than to a boat of this type. You could dump a whole lot more horse on a hull of this type and not get alot more out of it. On big water, on windy days, you won't be running wide open anyway, as 15 to 20 mph is about right in honest 3 footers.

I personally feel that if you have a 60 suzuki, and it makes economic sense, you won't be sorry at all. If you could somehow trade the 60 for a 70, it may be a little better, but the 60 would work just fine on the 20 alaskan. You would probably have a top speed aroud 27 to 28 mph with the right prop, and troll extremely well when you get there. I put a set of walleye master splashguards on mine and reccommend them.

im not totaly sure on prop pitch. think it is 15 tho. it is factory prop and i think it only comes 13 1/4 by 15.. my aluminum was bigger like 16 or 18 and didnot go as fast.

I think you should get in the low thirties with a 60.I have an 18 foot Alaskan with a 40 fourstroke Yamaha i get by myself in the boat 31 mph, with two 200 pound guys and all our gear including batterys i get 27 mph.Alaskans are great boats to fish and hunt out of. FISH ON.

My 20 Alaskan Tiller came in yesterday, eight weeks from the date of order instead of the twelve I was quoted!!! My Honda 50 will be installed this week and hopefully the weather will co-operate and we can go for a shakedown cruise.

Let me know what you think of your new combo when you get it on the water -- ability to plane, top speed, etc.
