All 3 cyl Merc 40-50-60 motors are awesome!$2400 is a very solid deal if the motor is in excellent shape and no money needed to shape it up (skeg fix, prop dings...).

I don't know what year Merc switched from the 4 cyl. powerhead to the 3 cyl. The 3 is a very good motor. I would pass on it if it is the 4 cyl. ver. It is a cross flow design that is not very efficient.

I personally have the 4cyl model and find it to be a very good motor, but a terrible GAS HOG. I don't have any info on the 3cyls but its got to be better on gas than mine. Sounds like a good deal. Good luck Swede

Swede, I had a 94 Merc.30 factory Jet( 40hp powerhead ) It was a REAL hog. Combine that powerhead, with the 30% loss on the jet and the gas mileage was terrible. I would go through 18 gal. of gas a day of fishing when my freind with a Suzuki Jet would go through half that. His was a 55 hp powerhead too. The 4 cyl. was a smoker too. I ran 100% synthetic and that helped cut down smoke by at least 60-70%. If the smoke bugs you at all, give the synthetic a try. For $5.00 more a gal. you can buy 100% synthetic.
